If they use 100% dry wood, it will burn much hotter and faster, but the wood will fully combust creating no carbon monoxide (in a perfect world) which means that their houses after ventilation will heat up faster and their house may be too hot for them anyways so opening the windows might be a way to cool down. The optimum thing to do would be to dry it to 100% then shred it really fine and compress it solid. Then it will burn fully, hotter and slower.

@primrosea yeah it is hard, but those who do move from climates like that take a couple years to get used to it unless they are kids it seems. It seems most Europeans don't have much trouble with Canada's +40C to -55C weather although it hasn't gotten past +37C where I live in at least 10 years. Though I don't think anyone likes going out past -40C unless there is no windchill. Wind and moisture always feel like the major killers of a winter which could be the problem there.

@Algoz and @cor3zone I live in southern California, where cold weather is rare, people mostly worry about the ac, and leave the heater with substandard maintenance (if the gas company didn't come out every few years to check it, mine probably wouldn't even function), so I can say that while we are used to the heat, we do insulate, but it's so it doesn't get as hot, from outside. Buildings are built to be able to cool down somewhat faster, by opeing windows, and letting the airflow freely through, rather than holding heat in. Seriously, this sudden climate change would be baffling, and terrifying. In my own experience, when the temperature dropped below 70° F (around 20-21° C) my friends and family starting freaking out, saying Trump had brought about the End Times, leaving the stove burning, or turning on the dusty heater with the possible gas leak....
