Ugh, I dislike these okama types in manga. Always over the top.
But at least now we know who Dias was. The guild master, eh.

Well I assume that the translators consciously chose to call Erza a she and her completely ruining the bit where Master asks if it's a woman or a man...you wouldn't ask if someone is a man or a woman after already having chosen to call them she and her...especially when Erza has a clear male physique...so I would guess at first they are using gender neutral pronouns to refer to Erza.

Now I don't throw shade at the okama trope, it's amusing in its own rights.

Just wondering if I am correct in my assumption or mistaken...I would like to see some raws of this.
Japanese doesn't have gendered pronouns so it's a lot easier to keep a character's gender ambiguous without bringing attention to it.

That aside, I was dreading reading the comments and sure enough it was painful. I mean, I do cringe at this type of caricature, there's not enough respectful depictions to make it not mean-spirited, but people are really overreacting here. (And yes I'm fully anticipating the indignant emotes I'll see below this post.)

As some comments already said, Japanese doesn't have gendered pronouns and using someone's name/surname/title with honorifics throughout the conversation is quite normal, so it is very easy is to have an entire conversation with someone or about someone without disclosing that person's gender. Meanwhile, I've heard several translator's talk about translating this to English and the opinions are varied. Some try to keep that vagueness, some say it comes across as too awkward and give up.
I don't have the raws, but I imagine all the "she" and "her" in the translation are either "Elza-san", "Big Sis" or just dropping the subject of the sentence all together.

On a side note, it was the Master that used 'Analyze' on Elza, but it's Fran who asks the question. I don't think Master shared his findings with Fran at any point, so him referring to Elza this way or another does not prevent Fran from asking the question.

Despite having watched One Piece, I only now looked into it in detail and apparently Okama/Onee is it's own unique subset of the gay culture within Japan, explicitly about men being flamboyantly effeminate and actually unrelated to being trans but rather closer to drag queens, as far as I can tell. So what I thought was a rather distasteful depiction of someone trans, is apparently a relatively faithful representation of this specific part of Japanese gay culture. The more you know.

And I have to say I'm not surprised but still disappointed about some of the comments on this chapter. The whole story is about the readers cheering for Fran as she is going against the whole world telling her [Evolution] for her race is impossible, to fulfill her dreams, but people will see a man dress and behave in a non-standard way and suddenly everyone is in the trenches fighting for the "traditional values". You don't have to like the character design, nobody is telling you to put a poster of it on the wall. But who are you to dictate others what they can or cannot do with their own lives. It doesn't negatively impact anyone.

Hmm. Remind me who Dias is? Wasn't sure if it was implying that he was actually Inina, or was just imitating Inina (and thus had been watching Fran the entire time she was down in the lobby).

Anyway, I don't remember him offhand, and a scan of a few random chapters doesn't jog any memories.

Yeh, will say there's def some psychic damage seeing the okama character, but as another said, honestly it also seems to be quite a thing to have the okama characters end up being some of the most solid mfers to the protag ever X3

And like, ok, to act like my Asian tranny ass doesn't also appreciate the okama confidence some... I mean hell, I've used that exact energy with a fashy looking security guard too (lowkey to bait the transphobia from him lol), sometimes it fucking works wonders to be all "fuck you, I'm a woman" while using my untrained voice X3 nothing makes folx pause more than being in a fully slutted out outfit, then dropping the lower voice when mfers are acting up nearby 🤭🤭🤭

Can't wait to see more of nee-san, esp seeing more of nee-san knock swordbruh off balance X3
