I think the point of agreeing to give the sprites one of the fruits was to incentivize better treatment of humans, by requesting only human goods in return. Sets the precedent that elves will make that trade in the future (true or not). Maybe he's hoping the sprites will become less parasitic and more symbiotic in the long term?
Or that could totally backfire and they try to completely enslave the islanders.
He said he'd return to Kaeha's grave now at the end of last chapter, but it didn't quite sink in for me that that was the end of his long journey to Fusou. Like "That's it?"
He can always come back though, whenever he feels like it.

If the sprites behave like other species living in functional genetic isolation on a small landmass all he's done is just give them a bit more time before inbreeding has made them extremely susceptible to disease or a change in climate.
They need regular injections out outside gene mass to comfortable face the trials of evolution.

Another land that could've been an arc or mini-arc cut weirdly short. It's like the series is accelerating over time... but it doesn't actually feel like it's building to something. Very weird.

Wasn't expecting him to leave the country without meeting a single oni.

It was like this too in the source novels. Something about him deciding the risks of meeting oni outweighed the benefits.

Felt really rushed, that one. And I guess this is one way to avoid the whole dilemma of having to somehow give the other side of the story. The author just avoided the Oni altogether, probably because he had no idea how to make the reader sympathetic to them given their "proclivities", as I suspected.
