I don't know if it's just noble custom, or if it's a Japanese thing, but this way of treating your kid/younger sibling as a plaything is really off-putting.

If I was that kid, I’d learn baleful polymorph and unleash it on my family and maids

I hope there comes a point where he actually is not treated like a sandbag by anyone and can actually make decisions for himself without crumbling the instant he mets even slight opposition.

Ahahah.
Funny...
I like how they try to make the sister seem like a normal lovable human being.
Nope, still a bitch, I still want her to disappear.

Also, Al is treated strangely. I mean, he's (outwardly) young, so of course you would not let him do anything he wants, you would try to teach him well even if he doesn't want it...
BUT! They let him go to the village alone, they force him through gruelling training sessions, they steal his ideas to make money but don't recognise him as a genius, they never seem even slightly concerned for his physical and mental well-being and they usually ignore his point of view completely, except, again, when they can make money off of it.

His family is actually shit. I think it would be better for him to be a noble orphan...

How did this work anyway? The merchant had a wide selection of clothes made in the correct sizes (that he somehow knew), and was hoping the family would buy so many of them that even if he had sell the rest to random people at discount prices, he would still make good profit? You'd think they would rather do it by taking measuments and then agreeing on various designs. The clothes of fitting sizes would then be made by tailors/seamstresses. That's how new clothes/shoes worked in ye olde times, apart from clothing that were one size fits all (like toga, etc). Of course regular households oft bought/made/acquired just fabric/leather/thread and made the clothes themselves.

Dunno if it holds any cultural truth to it, but behaving like a twat to the main character is done purely for jap comedy.
"Comedy".
Basic manzai act with the one who does stupid shit (the family) and the one who reacts to it (the MC). That means you must have an idiot, and someone to suffer the idiot's behavior to react to it. I don't think it's funny at all, but it doesn't bother me as much as it does for most of you all.

Yes it is bad. She is literally abusing you mc. Feels like you might have some kind of stockholms-adjacent syndrome going on here.

@Solipsist Huh. Thanks for clarifying. Never seen a manzai quite like this before. Just seems like a shitty family, not remotely funny.

Nice try, doesn't matter how "cute" you want to make that troll look like it will not make up for how shitty of a person she is.

True, to be fair it is not even how the sister act towards the MC that gets on my nerve but how the MC just receive all the abuse passively instead of actually reacting to it.
Having a idiot so the MC can react to the idiocy is all well and good but the MC has to react to it.
Another thing is that it is not only the sister but most other female characters and his father that one time.
I have no idea how the MC still hold any good feeling or can speak well of any of the maids, his mother or his sister at all at this point.

Dudes you guys are taking It too seriously, this mangá is not a drama or action mangá, mc will not kill or abandon his family just cause some normal family issues, yes his sister is annoying, his brother is more distant and have more responsabilities(he is being raised as the heir after all), these are normal family things. MC wanted a nice and good life from the begging, he doesn't want fame or being treated as a genius by everyone, he just wants a happy slow life where he can play around and rest a lot
too. Most of the complains I see here ignore these desires from the mc.

@Shakur In that case, being with his family actually runs counter to all of his desires. He's frustrated all the time, so not happy. There is no 'slow life', since everyone keeps dragging him around. He can play around, but always on someone else's terms and never his own. Instead of resting, he was beaten half to death by his father in 'training' and is constantly being forced to 'train' to the point of exhaustion.

I'm not saying I want him to snap, but any normal person has a breaking point. At some point, enough will be enough. With the kind of power Al has, it's a disaster in the making. I know this series probably won't change, but as it stands my rating keeps dropping for every chapter released.

@AbuHajaar

We should be happy that it gets translated since the first time I read the novel, it took a bout 2 years to continue the translation.

Everybody is complaining about mc's family and I am here thinking:" Huh, Silvio rocks that dress. He should do that in the story proper."

About family situation: I am under impression the older sister is the ordinary kind of bad sibling. But the parents aren't doing their job well. Maybe it's because they were raised like that too, and grew up overpowered adventurers.
I wonder if MC will run away from home at some point.

@Kaarme - I think it works by having all those clothes one-size-fits-all. If the clothes are bought, they are adjusted a bit to fit the actual owner. Seems practical enough for children's clothes - even if a noble's kid can afford a new dress every time, they sure wouldn't enjoy buying new dresses every time.

@flannan You can certainly adjust some pieces of cloth somewhat, but as we saw, they all seemed to fit them immediately when they were trying them on. Even the brute sister looked like a princess, with the dress size being spot on.

This is just the author not being aware of history or simply not thinking it through. I reckon it also complicates things that the historical Japanese clothes (like kimono) weren't quite as strictly fitted for any single person, which means a Japanese author, despite writing stuff located in pseudo-European historical setting, wouldn't necessarily realise the difference. Although that being said, I imagine even in Japan an average household in the old times would only buy fabric and make their own clothes. Wealthier folks or men living alone would visit a tailor, with even more powerful people having the tailor visit them (kind of like here the merchant visits the noble's house). In more rural areas it was most common for travelling merchants to visit farms to sell all kinds of wares the households couldn't make themselves.
