I read the previous chapter and rakan's timing was perfect was because he anticipated the whole thing from much earlier on. He even mentioned the part that failed to jinshi before telling him to assign mao mao to solve the problem of the three brothers. In a manner of speaking, he was trying to save jinshi's life but like mao mao he couldn't do more than speculate

Edit - The old officer who died (sake/weed don't remember) would have noticed the irregularities much earlier on so he was taken out. The question is is elaborate plot to assassinate jinshi who is prob. the emperor's brother. The thing is rakan also say this in jinshi's persence that people who have talent should be in positions to utilize it.

I bet there is a war of succession being fomented (by the nobles), rakan backs jinshi while there are others (it could be the king himself) attempting to assassinate him

@JadeRose @Arimama remember that the manga is based on the Light Novel, so i wouldn't be suprised if this part was from the LN, because this was not in the WN, there been already some changes from the LN in the manga tho, so this is most likely one of those

@MistLynx, no, he wasn't doing his job. His job was guarding the entrance in case something happened, and if there is an emergency, to notify his superior. She clearly stated that person's life is in danger and that altar was tampered with, yet he purposefully ignored that warning and even hit her (which definitely wasn't a part of the job).

So he is 100% guilty here, and he will get a death sentence for it without a doubt (being an accomplice of attempted murder).

There were 2 guards, the proper course of actions was to escort her with him just to make sure everything is alright, while the second guard stays there.

Rakan supports nobody. He gave hints here and there, but in case Maomao didn't figure it out, it wasn't really his problem either.
No merit or demerit was gained if he didn't involve with any faction to begin with. You could say that he just had too much free time (by pushing works to his subordinates) and ran around causing ruckus.
