Also just for the record, actually it's totally fine for a guard to beat someone to near death in the 'royal court'. They are not inside the main palace, Much like western castles, the 'castle walls' are around more than the actual physical palace. So your point about 'where' is just plain moot, because they're not anywhere super special that would result in a change of rules.

@WillLi Ceremonial sites (especially one with an on-going ceremony) have a bigger emphasis on not having impure stuff (shedding blood) than royal palaces. That is, if author is following such customs proper. Just sayin'.

@IMACOP This is true, however, they are not actually -in- the ceremonial site. They are on the approach. If they were actually in the site, the guard would likely be dressed differently, and be carrying a more ceremonial weapon, not a club. So it's probably safe to assume this specific altar, isn't 'sacred ground' until you're actually in the altar. Which is not uncommon for altars constructed within the castle walls.

@WillLi i’ve made it clear that i was not talking about her motives in getting the guard worked up , explained to you its more about the important of where this happened.
And no , a religious ritual ceremony in medieval china especially one being held in the royal palace is a pretty big deal you dont want people to make a scene here.
The fact that he beat someone , even when it isnt Mao Mao , almost half dead while guarding at such event is basically a major fuck up.
Even if the old dude and Jinshi didnt know about this the whole bunch of people wouldve still seen it and words will be passed around that someone got beaten half to death during a ritual ceremony.
Also about the “ come back when you realize that has absolutely nothing to do with what anyone is talking about.” part it wasnt me who pandered into the motive of Mao Mao baiting the guard , it was you who randomly brought it up so i was explaining my view to you ,dunno why you started getting defensive but w/e ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Arimama I'm like 99% certain this didn't happen in the novel. There was an incident involving a ceremony but it was an archer who shot someone not this elaborate Rube Goldberg trap.

At this point I'm very curious about how the manga is going to diverge from the novel. So far the manga has taken a more action-oriented approach while the novel has been mostly politics and slow calculated schemes with an occasional high-action plot point. Either way I like them both!
