Look, the eternal struggle is that men tend to like taller women, but women tend not to like shorter men.
Bro, it simply ain't true, men generally feel insecure and/or uneasy about women taller than they are. If anything, most men prefer the woman to be somewhat shorter than them, then you have men that prefer short women since it's quite contrasting and makes them feel big, tall, and dominating, and only then you would have men that prefer women taller than them.
Actually, this last category mainly consists of "weak" men that need an 'alpha' female in their lives. Japan, and Asia in general, are a special case since on the front men are holding leading positions in society since the overall preference for shorter women (actually, the fact that Yamada is not that uneasy about her height is outstanding and unusual), but on the inside families in Japanese society are matriarchies with men working and women controlling the money they earn and all family matters, including raising children.
So, we have the general trend en face being that women should be short and modest, and in the close family circle they're actually the ones ruling the party. Therefore, in works representing population's tacit fishes (i.g. manga) we have things like rape (its abundance in various Japanese media is a natural result of discrepancy, and frustration caused by it, of the society's public face and its inner one), fantasy worlds, extreme individualism both in character and look, and shota + onne-san combinations.
TL;DR: Actually, Japs prefer them
little short, whatd'ya ever mean, dude?
