A solid 10/10 read. Really cemented Kyotaro as a S-tier protagonist in character growth, in my books, barring his weakness to Anna and visibly growing out of his anxiety.

On another note someone please recommend me a similiar male protagonist.

While watching the anime, I thought that "The Dangers in My Heart" is a boy's perfect fantasy. Now that I'm reading the manga (up to Karte 100 at the moment), I starting to think that it is also a girl's perfect fantasy.

Let's start with Ichikawa's superficial qualities, that Yamada likes or at least might like. Ichikawa is academically successful, and teachers are praising him for further improvements. Yamada doesn't mind his fashion sense (see the scene when they discuss that he dresses in all black); the extra manga chapters with flash-forwards even show that Yamada started to match her jewelry to Ichikawa's skulls on his clothes. She also seems to be attracted to his body, as seen in the scene when they compare his right arm just out of the cast to his left arm.

Ichikawa helps and protects her in difficult situations. The very first encounter in the library where he lent her his box-cutter knife is an example. Then he distracted the Pickup-senpai with his bicycle. Ichikawa also helped with rehearsing for her first film. Later, their late night talk about him being worried that he isn't a good son helped her with her role as well.

Most importantly, Ichikawa understands Yamada on a level, which even Kobayashi and her other friends don't. This is mostly shown through scenes, where Ichikawa discusses Yamada's work and her feelings about it with her. Ichikawa also understands very well what worries Yamada. Aside from instances, when Ichikawa is overwhelmed by his insecurities, he has an incredible ability to say just the right thing to Yamada.

Another positive quality of Ichikawa is that he gets along pretty well with Yamada's friends, her parents (!), and his sister.

Unlike Kanzaki and Adachi, Ichikawa is never rude or vulgar. Unlike Pickup-senpai, Ichikawa got to know Yamada before the confession.

P.S. I reposted this on reddit, where there's some discussion and interesting points made by commenters:

Don’t know why I’m spoiling myself reading ahead when I usually like to watch anime without knowing what comes next.

Okarun, Dandadan. Just don't mind the supernatural battle shounen stuff too much.

Okay, This manga is extremely good until around chapter 111. I know Ichikawa, I was him in my university days. I know very well what it is to be "that" guy. Nerdy, no confidence at all and still... got a girlfriend.

Having a girlfriend boost your mind state like no drug can ever do. In fact I was getting perfect scores... and I did not studied for my exams. IT WAS THAT GOOD.

But I feel that the author is simping Ichikawa hard. We have desires, we have ambitions... yes there is the next academic step for Ichikawa but I cannot help to feel that Yamada is becoming annoying not due too her actions, but due to her job is extremely frustrating.

I'm married now, well in the end of my 30s, and if there is something that I have concluded, is that celebrities, TV ones specially, have no place other than in entertainment and have to keep their opinions very well to themselves (Otherwise you have taylor swift syndrome). This is quite diminishing to Yamada's character.

Somehow I hope that she gets out of that job somehow, she is capable of far more than that crappy job can offer to her and I hope that Ichikawa is permitted to be at least more selfish towards him, as it did at the beginning of the series. At this point is beginning to become that simp that says and accepts everything, just because Yamada.

God gracious, this series was really good until chapter 111. Has been a while since I rambled like this.

I am glad you are being so honest in a public forum. I am in my mid 40s, married my high school sweetheart but even prior to us knowing each other, I share many of Ichikawa's experiences at around age 17. And for those that I don't share, they seem completely plausible it's just not possible for one person to touch so many bases in 1 year in real life.

What I find odd is the choice of age for the characters. Is it really possible at age 14 to have such depth in emotion? In your uni days you would have been at least 8 years older than Ichikawa no?

When I got my girlfriend was around me having 20 or so years old. Playing devils advocate, yes, it is possible that Ichikawa would hold such feelings, but this requires an immense amount of solitude (in fact, I think the author got this right, as I was quite alone back then and my mind wandered a lot... just not reading whatever Ichikawa is reading).

However, What it is not so feasible is Ichikawa totally suppressing his hormones for so long, I mean, seriously, in adolescense hormones and emotions are out of control and we would not be adults if we weren't able to control them.

For both Yamada and Ichikawa, given the amount of affection they have, passionate encounters would already have happened and from this comes several important decisions, because time is inevitably running and both of them are slowly but surely turning into adults.

Decisions need to be made and here is were I see the author is loosing it a bit, as she does not understand very well the mentality of Ichikawa. Because she does not fully understand him she is simping him and this is totally wrong.

As a man who holds passionate feelings for a woman he would at least talk with her what exactly she wants for the future, as a plan needs to be made in order for them to be together. If a silly answer like "I do not know, we will see in due time" is given, no plan can be made and this also would seriously hurt their relationship, as nothing can be taken seriously by leaving such important step into the hands of luck.

We know however that Ichikawa does not like luck, therefore I would think that if the relationship is at a stake he would put serious effort into making a plan for both of them to be together, but again, they really would need to talk about that, if they really want each other for the rest of their lives...

but to be honest, this is a bit beyond of what an adolescent guy and girl can even manage to foresee, then again this is a manga, if anything, the author can make both Yamada and Ichikawa quite enduring for their love, and just perhaps... allow Ichikawa to be in the frame, leading the relationship somehow into a path that both of them can be. The author has made until chapter 111 Ichikawa somehow the one that leads the relationship, and Yamada likes to tease him a bit in order for his feelings towards her to arise.

One can just imagine.

@Arceles:

I don't think Kyo is so much suppressing his hormones and desires (though that does come into play) nearly so much as his still-present self-doubt holds him back from feeling free to and/or capable of allowing them to roam. And we've seen that addressed directly, most notably in the love hotel arc.

Anna, however, despite not truly being able to understand what he's going through (no one who hasn't been there really can), has proven herself time and again capable of patiently nudging him along the path toward greater self-acceptance and encouraging him to accept the good things she can offer him as a partner -- the full range of those good things -- affirming him when he moves forward, gently admonishing him when he falters and only occasionally letting him see her own frustrations when she's at a loss.

The events of V12 are neither rushed nor unreasonably delayed. For these two to reach a point where they have considered both their present feelings and issues as well as their immediate futures individually and as a couple post-111 required time and a considerable amount of talking things through properly. It's unreasonable to expect anyone to have a plan with any level of detail forecasting five to ten years of actions leading to a desired outcome, particularly at a time when so much is subject to change. The shared intent to reach that outcome along with the determination to make whatever adjustments are necessary to do so is what's important. V11 shows us Kyo's willingness to make sacrifices now toward that end while V12 shows us, yes, a bit more of that but also the willingness to grow and mature in the here and now in a positive way that keeps the relationship moving along the path to that outcome.

it's not like Anna hasn't told him she wants a future with him. She's been quite upfront with him about making memories now that they can look forward to revisiting a decade or more down the road. V10 and 11 are in no small part about the importance his presence holds in her life and her willingness to disregard whatever else she has to in order to keep that -- and, to an extent, her annoyance when she feels her determination to do so is being underestimated. She will defy the expectations of friends, business associates and (in V12) family, and would have gone much further even than that to declare to the world and to Kyo that he's more important than anyone, more special than anyone, had Kyo himself not acted to preserve a career path for her that she would throw away instantly if it were necessary to be with him. (This may be the one point they haven't discussed enough directly to come to a mutual understanding at this point, and will likely become an important plot point as we move past V12 and into content beyond the scope of the anime's next season.)
