@doubledutch The story opens up with the staircase story, which you are correct when you say it's a metaphor, it's basically an outline of what happened to Shuli in her past life, the relationships she had with the family and her struggles as the Marchioness after the Marquess died. Of course, I feel that the Marquess did love Shuli but not as a lover; more like a daughter/niece. Hence, why the children were probably jealous of her and treated her the way they did, but I also think that they cared for her since the Marquess did (this also explains why they tried to push her away, they knew that she was forcefully pulled into the life of a Marchioness and did not want to feel the burden of losing someone else in their family, so that Shuli could run away just like they had heard of in the rumors the other family members spread) Kind of like a love-hate relationship. However, some of this is speculation, but this is what I could piece together from the story. The story is complex and requires a bit of thinking to piece the story together; quite different from other time travel manhwa I've read, but I believe it's an incredibly well written story. I hope this helps.
