@HuevoPodrido I think it's pretty much since the father is newly promoted, if he takes her as a equal wife(instead of a concubine) it would imply that he isn't humble and thankful for the promotion and more greedy. Plus main wife is given authority over the harems so having the aunt as the equal wife suppresses the first wife's authority and causes strife in the household. This news would spread to the populace who in these stories spread gossip like wildfire and imply Father is greedy and uncaring to the peace of his house.
Like I said I think, but I could be wrong.

@HuevoPodrido In this case, having two equal wives would cause a power imbalance. If he has two "head wives," the Censor will see them competing for power in the family, and therefore the wives would not be following the Three Obediences (father, husband, son) nor the Four Virtues (Ethics/Speech/Visage (looks+manners+comportment)/Works in matrimony.) He'd lose face because he'd be seen as an impotent husband who has masculine wives who are vying for power and favor.

@sunshinelemons Thanks, you put that better than I could. I have read enough Chinese novels to get the jist of why, but don't know how to proper articulate like what you wrote.

@HuevoPodrido I actually get scared when my toddler aged nephew plays in curtains, he loves to hide inside them and twirl around the cloth, children really can strangle themselves on the cords. It would never happen while your watching, but if they get into the habit of playing there, like for hide and seek or peek-a-boo, what's to stop them from going there when your busy in the next room cooking and getting choked to death in the 5-10 minutes your not paying attention? (BTW I NEVER leave him unattended)But he's 18 months old and just learned to walk. An adult tripping and strangling on a curtain sounds pretty far fetched.

I have mixed feelings about this, it would be a lot more believable if the mc wasn't acting smug all the time whenever she does something against her aunt and sister, makes me wonder how it isn't backfiring and making her stupid dad just even more angry.
