The problem isn’t that he’s soulless, it’s that he’s incompetent and an idiot. If he was coldly logical, always putting the needs of the many before the needs of the few, or of the one, then I think Scarlet and her mother could respect that. Because even if it’s the opposite of them, at least it’s sticking to your principles.
Like how Lily sacrificed her life; yes, part of it was to spite the plotters, but it was also for the good of the kingdom.

Be a cold, logical, competent man who will sacrifice his family for the safety and prosperity of the hundreds of thousands of people in the nation, or be a loving husband and family man who takes the time and effort to get to know your new wife. Don’t be a wishy-washy hypocrite that says “because you’re my wife” when you haven’t even met your wife in weeks while doing a job that you hadn’t even been doing for months, and didn’t need to do.
