@mahtan,

This is not really the case. While you say that it's only normal for "poor people" to marry someone your age, on the contrary, it was only somewhat normal (but not really) for aristocrats to marry much younger women. And this was during patriarchal society times, when women had only one role in high society - being a bride, so they were married off ASAP.

In this world that's clearly not the case: women are equal to men there, they have just as much power and influence as men, so there is absolutely no reason why a woman would want to marry at the age of 15, and the age difference marriage also doesn't make any sense, especially such a big difference.

Even in our world it was never normal or acceptable for a grown man to marry 12 years old girl, but novels were deviant, so they did crazy stuff like that from time to time.

Yes, marriage with like 5-7 years difference was okay, so a 23 years old man could perhaps marry a 16 years old woman, but it wasn't common to see a bigger age gap, unless it was not a happy marriage, but a marriage with a purpose of getting some benefits for the family, and no normal family would view such marriage favourably if they actually cares about their daughter.

This stereotype is so common because in literature we often see this happen precisely because authors considered it to be an outrageous thing and portrayed nobles doing it all the time to show the difference between nobles and normal people.

This setting is clearly not based on historic events, and their cultural level is much higher than it was during our world's history, it just feels like they went the path of magic instead of the path of technology. No sane person, noble or commoner, would want his barely 18 daughter to marry a 30 years old guy.

I don't think the age is actually really the problem here...

Pretty sure the situation could be reversed, and they would STILL have a beef with the marriage partner...
It's more the fact that ANYBODY really actually tried to propose for marriage to her, so good luck to her future husband because it looks like he would first need to survive her family trying to kill him first... then he might have a shot.

"Since there are many stupid men who believe blushing is a consent."
JESUS CHRIST MA'AM- (LOL)

And can you imagine failing "common sense"?? How embarrassing would that be? Looking at you Sperados.

Thank you for the translation!

@Melcyna After seeing who her lover will be and after reading spoiler, I think he will get her family consent to marry her easily.

@Arkos, it wasn't actually common in medieval times for 30 years old to marry 18 years old. It was just also frowned upon back then, and only people who viewed their daughters as tools to gain extra influence did it.

And yes, magic is a very big deal. Magic erases physical differences between men and women, so there would be no reason for patriarchal society in a world of magic, as female magician can be more powerful than male swordsman. So there would be literally no reason for a girl to marry someone she doesn't like, because she can be just as busy with her studies, and she can achieve the same results by herself, if she wants to.

So there is no point comparing actual medieval setting with magical medieval setting, as they can be fundamentally very different, and the only thing in common can be lack of technology. It can be a matriarchal society, if women are the only one capable of magic, for example, and then the rules can be VERY different. Or it can be virtually anything else. The only medieval thing about thing story is that there are no cars and planes, the culture doesn't have to adhere to medieval times.

So yeah, it's perfectly normal for family to be outraged that some random dude that is TWICE the age of their daughter wants to marry her.

If she was 16 and he was 23, it would be somewhat okay. If she was 12, and he was 17, it would be alright in some situations to arrange a marriage as well, since they are technically both children and 5 years age gap is not too big. E.g. if sir Conrad's family offered a marriage, that would be acceptable, as he is what, 16 or 17? And their family has similar social standing, and Leslie is acquainted with the guy himself, so there would be nothing wrong despite the age difference.

But some random 24 years old guy proposing is nonsense. This could even be viewed as looking down on ducal house. Whenever there is a marriage with big age gap, it was always the case that the bride's family was the one that benefited from it, since this was viewed as unfavorable match for a bride, so the groom had to be of higher social standing for it to ever happen. In those cases bride's feelings weren't even considered, the only purpose of such marriage was benefit.

It's very clear that the Duke house isn't the type to arrange such marriages, and most importantly, they care about Leslie's feelings a lot, so naturally they would be outraged.

there were cases of marriages with close age such as "Catherine II" who is younger than her husband by one year
the thing that made marriage with older men common was that women didn't have any worth beside their beauty and once they age it's gone that's why many parents hurried to marry their daughters before they stick in their home forever and they became a burden to their family since they can't work
even then marriage with slight age gape was more favorable unless it was for the king heck for kings even incest was legit
but magic change the power dynamic making women useful even if they didn't manage to marry
-----------
even without that the media does often gloss over the ugly things in our history such as slavery , corruption , plagues , racism ,unfairness ,men fighting each other to death for entertainment ,how old buildings looked like shit , animal abuse being common thing , people selling their wives , how cruel and cold blooded everyone was , domestic abuse was the norm , not obeying your parents give them the right to kill you be it a male or female , half of the population was addicted to wine ......
most of the behaviour of the old people beside marriage is disgusting and no one would be entrained by such things that's why altering some things is necessary
but this manga is set in a different world with magic and things we don't have so that give the author a pass that their history may have gone a little different than ours

@Arkos, @mahtan,
TL;DR:

1. The marriages with a big age caps were never considered "normal" even amongst the nobility: they were deviant, but nobility still did whatever they wanted, and nobody could really oppose them. It was still frowned upob, but it still happened. "Normal" age gap was 5-7 years, not 12+.

2. Females in our history were oppressed and viewed in inferior way, because they were physically weaker, in this setting physical strength is not the only kind of power available, so the gender gap is smaller, and women aren't viewed as only bride material.

3. Their family isn't interested in benefits over happiness of their daughter, so naturally it is normal for them to be outraged about deviant behaviour of other families who treat their daughter as a political tool and dare to offer a marriage with a man twice her age.

4. The setting doesn't have to follow the original, even if it has similar style. If you think it should, you are delusional. Smallest differences in history could warp the setting significantly, even if it was posed as historical. And the magic is not just a small change in setting, it can completely warp the world, even if there are some similarities. So your complaints are simply invalid. There are no serious contradictions in the setting, unless it somehow contradicts itself. Social structure can be similar, but culture can be completely different. In this setting females are educated and have high social standing, they aren't just marriage material. The parents would be just as outraged if some 24 years old women they have never seen offered to marry their 12 years old son, I don't see any inconsistency there.

Oh man i really don’t want to read an arc where we meet people/some entitled ass that want to marry/seduce her because characters like that make me FUME MY BLOOD BOILS. It always the same shit where they tell the girl to know her place in society how grateful she should be to be considered and how no one else will ever love her but in a sly manipulative way. But I understand if that’s the case cause it will show how much she grows in her confidence. That’s said I’m sure her doting family will help her along the way :3
