DBZ is known to have a large Hispanic following. When I think of either Saint Seiya or Dragon Ball, I think of Mexico in particular. Japan once sent Mexico a cease and desist because pirating of Dragon Ball was so out of control over there.

There is also a noticeable trend online with black men (usually the neckbeard type but not always) and worshipping Naruto/battle shonen in general. Naruto, Bleach and One Piece (the big three) were available late at night on Adult Swim in the US on Cartoon Network. CN is on cable and cable is usually a package deal, so most people had access to it. Poor and urban areas didn't have much, so TV and the web were one of the few free things poor, young black people could partake in as a hobby.

I think the OP of that reddit thread was someone who had browsed /a/ or MAL for the first time and couldn't see through the banter, memes and shitposting.
It was probably an honest question, but
