IMHO it read more like she's trying to negotiate from a position of power. She's confident in her ability to escape,( if not outright beat them all) but she cant do so with Sofia being held hostage, so she threatens to discard the one thing her 'stepmom' values.

(Almost positive that the 'scary lady' from the ball will get involved soon.)

What would happen to the earldom exactly if she renounced the title? Since no one else belongs to that family by blood, wouldn't the title cease to exist? In which case, she's threatening her stepmother, not testing her.
