I'm surprised this is seemingly like the first time anyone's gone "hmm, you are best friends with one of the most extroverted people in school after all". No one questions why one of the most popular people at the school is best friends with the gloomiest, and I think that's nice. Hinako could make a bunch of friends if she got out there more.

I like that in Chapter 1 and Chapter 26 we see that other people in the school at least somewhat interact with Hinako and care about her despite said gloominess, it's really sweet

Also, is it messed up to think that if the monsters keep coming, Hinako will never be truly happy? She'll always worry that her bestie and her totally not girlfriend will get hurt protecting her? That way Hinako won't get eaten!

I think its more so the fact that the happier/more fun Hinako has, the closer she gets to having to fulfil the promise with Hinako and she doesnt want to do that anymore

I think it’s both. Hinako only really smiles towards Shiori when it comes to her own eventual death and that is making Shiori feel inadequate. It’s making her think that all she is good for is keeping a promise that she doesn’t want to keep.

I can't believe this is getting an anime, I hope they do good job of adapting the moody and bleak art with color added. The monster designs too.
