@MCX01 I don’t think it’s that simple. Based on the first generation story it looks like the succeeding mc (reincarnation) is the hero that similarly to the 1st gen transferred her power into her lover either unintentionally or through the church manipulating her unnoticed. As the moment she is required to deal the final blow she has a breakdown, runs away afraid of the memories, kills herself, it loops as you said or something else. Maybe she simply never could kill the demon king knowing it was someone important to her. If she was repeatedly killed perhaps her lover of each life similarly become demon king’s or in this case are the body double/shadow that the next hero defeats.

When you call this an isekai, the MC is not from another world. But it's hard to not be called an isekai manga, because the MC got reincarnated from the person from another world.

Why almost in all isekai thingy the cause is always the king or the church? Is because it's convenient?

Japanese author generally have a lot of 'not so common views/strange' views towards religion. Not only in isekai genre.

@L0tuscrime Well, they held almost all the power in the kingdom. A bad choice made for them is so much big than a bad choice made for a communer.

Yes. That's exactly why.

Even in this story, pretty much every bad thing that's happened has been because somebody in power has been selfish and/or evil. I'd call it a theme if it was explored more, but as it stands it's more of a cliche played straight.

@L0tuscrime - because royalty and religion embodied in king and church are easily recognized bodies of authority that don't require much explanation as to why they have authority.

@herz

people die over some douche's political calculations all the time. More so, it isn't really stupid, needlessly selfish and vicious, but not stupid. Even if you assume the church had the same amount of power then that it does now after having the reputation of saving the world from the demon king for centuries, the church and it's priests would still be a political rival to the king and doing things to undermine their authority, like claiming their savior is actually a villain, strengthens his own power. So, yeah, selfish and terrible in the extreme but not actually stupid.
