The thing that makes high school romance work is that the characters are immature and don't like expressing their feelings honestly. I used to love this stuff when I was in high school myself, but now it just feels like these kids are being stupid. MC know that she likes him and he clearly likes her too, so why is he allowing these misunderstandings to continue to pile up?

There's a ton of messed-up stuff in his background that doesn't really come to the forefront for the equivalent of another volume and a half of the novels from where we are here, but we've seen enough of that stuff here to recognize that he simply doesn't let himself fully buy into the reality of what he knows to be true. He'll continue to struggle with this, ironically coping with his trauma more successfully the more time he spends with Maria and regressing the more time he spends alone with Alya.
