There are digital cameras that looked like that. I had one as a kid. They got phased out when cellphones where able to take pics, but it was the cheaper, consumer-grade version instead of the high-powered professional version.

Maybe i missed smth? Why not cancel and/or reschedule AC guy, not your sons girlfriends first ever visit? Timing in romance is important. In routine AC maintenance - not so much. Mom of the year material.

Think of it like a work appointment or something. Something you really shouldn't cancel unless you have a good reason. Companies tend to be pretty busy and rescheduling messes with their entire schedules, so it's not a great thing to do if avoidable. Plus, most companies don't really do same-day cancellations without penalties (for the scheduling reasons). But in this case there highly likely an element of Japanese politeness mixed in. Cancelling is probably pretty rude if it isn't an emergency.

Edit: Oh wait, the dude was already at the house. Yeah, no way could she cancel it when he's already there for the appointment.

Well, at the end of the day it's one thing - a plot device. A reason why the visit will be at her place. With her dad being at work. And probably coming home just in time to see something that can be quite misleading.
