I think it's less that they stopped hanging out and more that he just wasn't really aware of her in that sense until recently. She was just kind of someone who was always around but he never took much interest in because he was a child, but now he's going through puberty

It's true, kids just naturally grow apart. Especially with their age difference. With her keeping an eye on him it seems like they were more than just acquaintances. I think in a future chapter
