They think people didn't have soap in the past. Maybe, if they lived on an island?

@givemersspls You don't seem to understand. In Japanese Isekai, the people wash themselves with Japanese pee pee. Because, you know, they have a fetish for Japanese pee pee. So, when you show them a new product that doesn't smell like Japanese pee pee, they go crazy for it.

@givemersspls did you miss the part where the merchant was able to guess it was soap and that his wife liked soaps? So obviously they already had them, the question is how good they were compared to what he was offering.

And as for the hair lotion... funny thing is I had my hair cut today and was recommended to try some due to my hair being frizzy. After she put some in my hair it was no longer frizzy, looked shinier, and felt a bit smoother. So I can attest from personal experience that it is accurate.

The terror of a woman seeking beauty products. But yeah, of course this stuff would sell well.

The quality of modern amenities will always be leagues better than their equivalents in the past. Soap exists, but soap this good and probably cheap? It'll fly off the shelves.

That ad on page 3 looks pretty nice, I'd buy some Fenrir hair products.

I am honestly surprised he didnt think the women would go crazy for those kind of products, you'd be rich for life if you're at the top of the beauty industry

@Awsim I don't think the series was acting like soap didn't exist. The wife was clearly stated to love soap and stuff like that, so soap probably does exist. However, good soap is usually a luxury of the rich and wasn't feasible to use every single day unless you were pretty wealthy. Your every day soap for the average person back in those days weren't all that great, and didn't really smell all that great either.

@Awsim the merchant recognized the bar of soap right away. They didn't act like soap didn't existed, rather the quality of what our MC got was much different.

Soap made from tallow compared to pine tar, soap berries, or the synthetic stuff we have today act very differently.

Almost everyone complaining about how the soap is new and all despite the Manga page clearly states that the wife and the merchant already knew about it
What surprised them is how good it cleans (really possible) and how good it smells (I don't think middle age soap smells as good as nowadays soap)
Kinda surprise me that @goodhunter is the only one so far who mention the soap fragrance

The merchant was clearly really rich (having the bathtub and all) so he probably had access to soap bars of atleast somewhat good quality (might be wrong, I really don't know much about medieval soap, but also it's a magical world, so they could have expensive magical soap of just as good of a quality as the current soap here on earth).

@Awsim

Soap probably might not necessarily be a big thing there. But scent-infused soap ? They might not have yet thought out distillation to make very 'pure' liquids (alcohol mostly), and especially how to use it with scents.

@givemersspls Merchant: "This soap smells good, reminds me of flowers."
Your interpretation: "Glorious nippon soap folded over 1000 times."

Forget complaining about isekai stereotypes, you're a stereotype yourself.
