Sure, but like if I know im looking for someone who has power levels off the charts at the #1 spot... and some Joe Nobody shows up and with a simple vertical slash light swing OBLITERATES our power measuring device we use to measure some of the top fighters out there...

...I'm sure as fuck going to take some notice. Like clearly the device isn't some prototype bullshit, and sees everyday use to measure and rank people. So they know what to expect when using it. And if it took a hit so hard it literally exploded?

Me personally on this mission? I'd have at least had someone notified to look into whomever did it, because even if they aren't the #1 we were looking for they gotta be like in the top 10, easy.

Like I get it, its a fav trope: My fuckin' power level is over 9000! omfg the scouter/crystal/device breaks/explodes/reads nonsense... Huh! Must be faulty! No way that could possibly be right despite these devices being used all the time and considered reliable and well understood.

Still, you'd think someone with half a brain would like.... question that. Lol
She didn't just break the device, she basically lightly tapped it and both the measurering device and the sword exploded. That reads to me as the result of a core resonance catastrophe, not the person has enough power to create an explosion on impacts that destroys both sword and measurering device. Especially as both the sword and measurering device contain materials with an extremely high energy density (Stranger cores).

Machine malfunctions just happen sometimes and the reaction says that similar but not-as-catastrophic failures have happened before, that lot will be recalled and there will be a new batch with preliminary fixes and new safety suggestions(probably something like "make sure to test the swords for compatibility before running a live test") in a couple months, then a report in 2-4 years where they narrow down the possible points of failure and there will be no conclusive exact cause(a significant part of the evidence is gone, after all) but it will be referenced fairly often

What is Eiri's plan anyway to get #1? She finds out who the current #1 unknown is and then what? She already knows they're far more powerful than her already with the ability to 1-shot S-rank strangers.

What if there's a plot twist? since we didn't see her rank in the screen it might reveal her name and us too we didn't see it because of that. But the plot twist might become funny like she's rank 50 but stronger than rank 1? (I'm just saying this, I'm not saying she isn't rank 1, I'm just getting ready to the oblivious plot twist in the end.)
Plot twist: Its actually Kinoko's sister that's #1 :dogkek:

If all they used were katana, sure, but they used many other weapons, and would have been able to defeat them with those. Even with full plate knights were taken down by longbows, and especially with [三人張り] Sannin-bari and [四人張り] Yonnin-bari, 3-man and 4-man bows respectively (the number of men indicating number of average strength men needed to bend the stave and string the bow) could easily have done so; modern Kyuudo bows are similar in draw weight to modern English archery practice bows, because they don't rely on serious strength; it's a sport about precision, rather than power. The "shit quality of the iron" was why they needed to forge it so much, by the by; it got it pretty pure and forced the iron sand to form a cohesive whole. The quality issue was in the raw material, not the finished product.

So between 256 (lower-end, mass-produced blades) and 65,536 (higher-end, probably ceremonial blades like the giant swords mounted in shrines) layers? Sounds about right (every fold is 2^n, where n = the number of the fold; 8 is 256 but 10 is 1024; exponential growth is a hell of a thing).

During the first, you mean? Because by the second they had adapted to the tactics of the Mongols and held them off at the beaches. And the only reason they stomped the samurai during the first invasion (and weren't tested in return if they could have adapted earlier) was because they were used to honourable duels, aka 1 on 1 combat, while the Mongols brought squad-based combat tactics.

I swear I posted my original comment as a fun joke referring to her power level. I didnt mean for this to become
Just to interupt the TL;DR Weapon Weeb War, I want to remind them that the samurai had an anti-armor weapon they used all the time.

Being a 7-ranker by your own devices vs. being a 9-ranker with connections be like…
:smugnako:

Bruhhhhh. Again with the brain made of neuron star core wrapped in depleted uranium and gently placed in a lead skull level of dense.

"I'm looking for the #1 ranked unknown. We know they are stupidly powerful!"

Ma'am! This random nobody girl gently swung a sword and bisected a knight in full plate armor. and totally broke our power level measuring machine! You know the one we use all the time to quantity peoples power levels... and as such must be a fairly reliable way to do so as we rely on it!

"Hmmm must have been a fluke! take her to the infirmary!"
“Also, she’s close friends with Nadeshiko who seems intent on hiding Unknown’s identity for whatever reason. I’m sure I’m overthinking this…”

Wouldn't Eiri accidentally be a natural friend towards Kinoko?
She seems really used to klutzy people like her, which would help her be "friends" with her target by proxy.
Yeah, felt like even Chapter 4.5 way back already hinted at that.
If I were to predict the future plot, this is going the -> Eiri becomes evil because of the seed -> Only Kino can save her -> They become BFFs in the process route.

i'd be inclined to agree normally (and FWIW i'm not a staunch supporter of this series, that "part time job" arc legit made me drop the series til now once i finished my backlog) but i think they've actually done an acceptable job establishing that "genuinely terrified-looking school girl shaking like a fucking leaf (on a tree actively being cut down) (in a fucking blizzard) just from holding a weapon for the first time" is pretty goddamn disarming appearance-wise, and i could personally even see myself making the logical leap of "she looked like she was afraid the gun would explode in her hands" + "sword actually did explode in her hands" = "maybe she's just that kind of extremely unlucky person for whom the gun would've exploded too" or whatever. plus, i mean fuck it, who knows, maybe they literally never tested the testing device for anything but proper swinging motions from people genuinely trying their best, & they never considered someone would slowly insert the sword while shaking like a leaf so they didn't notice a design flaw that caused said catastrophic failure- they'd at least need to do a post-mortem on the device to find out what actually happened, right? at least that's the line of logic that i see as more likely to leap to than "that chihuahua must actually be the incarnation of Shiva in hiding we've been searching for lol"

that said though, yes, everyone in this series is still just a tad too dense to the point of it being tired and overused; they could've played up the new girl being so preoccupied on sucking up to/getting info out of the friend character so she just didn't see the signs (like physically) as opposed to seeing them and just willfully ignoring them, lol. (she really, REALLY should've taken notice that the girl she's trying to get close to due to her possible contact with her real target, basically only hangs out with a single person! and then once weird shit happens to said person it's definitely worth giving her a second look, despite her initial appearance as being harmless! even if you initially completely discounted the weirdness, like i tried to logic away earlier!)
then again, though, even that level of denseness might've been excusable had the previous arc not happened- that shit basically sapped all possible goodwill toward the series' writing re: character obliviousness, since it all-too-clearly established it's gonna be basically the sole trope the entire series leans on to function & the author doesn't realize that repeating a joke doesn't make it funnier...
