Austin's general dont actually have any military power, he's just there for ceremony purpose. So Austin highest rank is Colonel. Major in this story can command anywhere between a regiment (like someone we will meet very late in the story) or entire front (like Renvel here)

If infantry men looked like a Rambo sorta guy that'll just hella muscle getting in the way of movement in a environment where you have to rely on running around a lot. Not practical to be built like a bear nowadays.

They're probably not real medical professionals, but blacksmiths, butchers, hard laborers, etc. But they're still city dwellers and they live better than most people. The soldiers, especially rank-and-file conscripts are more likely to come from less fortunate areas where they dont have many better options than being a soldier.
