@Thunderbrownies if i refer to WN, it maybe about 2-4 chapter (manga), then it's focus will back to makoto...

if you guys really bothered by it's slow progress story, you may like to read WN first... this manga, i guess its near chapter 64 in WN,

he's tried talking but his opponent doesn't seem to understand him
so he has to write in the air to communicate
he did so and she responded while inadvertently giving him some hints - it was probably enough information for him
his priority was to assess the situation so he could act accordingly (e.g. not run into the main army in an attempt to flee)
he had no luxury to come up with a conversation topic like talking about the weather or the humidity

A whole chapter where nothing happened. MC just made a long ass self narration repeating what already happened, wasting time as usual, and side characters making sappy talk. But the whole time they were just standing there, talking in the speed of light.

Woah, I totally forgot what the plot was, what happened to the mc and why is he acting like he's not sober?

@WillLi Hacking in computing and programming means that you inject a code into an existing program. What Kirito did was using Yui's privileges to turn her into an item in game which is already a function within the system. That is not hacking, learn what it actually means.

Now as for the main point. No, the tension is not from this new enemy he's about to fight. The tension comes from the fact Makoto just got whisked away by the bitch goddess. All these people in front of him are stop signs just to hinder him, thus they're more just annoyances. Nothing is done to build up tension that Makoto might be in danger because of them, rather the underlying problem that the Goddess has found him and is now using him as a chess piece.

@Foreverkidd That...is not what hacking means. Hacking means accessing or manipulating data in a system without authorization. Code injection is a specific type of hacking...at least look up the terms man. Also turning her into an item was -not- part of the system's normal function. Normal function was to delete her as she became 'alien code'. Kirito turned her into an item as a bypass so that she registered as essentially a 'custom item' which thus wouldn't get deleted. Look up her bio on the wiki man, you really don't remember the little details.

As for the rest of this. The tension is coming from the 'situation' which the enemy is part of. Here's a hint, this fight will now span across 3 chapters minimum, and they constantly interrupt it at the point we think something is going to happen to build dramatic tension. This chapter is full of narrative tricks specifically designed to build tension. As for the danger...if you don't think the panic of his retainers, the fact that he lost 2 fingers right away, the fact that he's 'not allowed to run' do not build a sense of 'danger' or are at least an attempt at it...you're opaque to literary design. 'Danger' doesn't have to be "Oh this character can kill the MC in one shot" or something like that. And the MC doesn't have to actually -be- in danger for them to try and build tension with 'danger'. Which is the actual problem in that there is no danger really, but they're still writing this as a tense and dangerous situation, which it's not at all.

@WillLi Knowing how to use your power and being able to deal with an opponent are very different things, and that gets especially true in fantasy settings with magic where anyone may have a rock that can beat your scissors. The only requisite for something to be a threat is that it's attacks can hit and deal damage. Sophia represents a threat not just because she's absurdly powerful
a level 900 something dragon eater mutant thing with years more experience in magic combat than Makoto
, but because she has a lot of skills which let her attack from figurative blind angles. THAT SAID, yes she's squandered her surprise round
and now her smug is going to get ground into the dirt after she tries her 'turn off the goddess's blessing' magic and it does nothing to weaken Makoto for the obvious reason.

the plot: mc got isekaid by thot goddess and was disposed of for being fugly, got op, got followers and is now looking for acceptance and a place to fit, 2 attractive Japanese also got isekai'd.

this chapter: Mc got kidnapped b y the goddess on its way to the academy in order to stall the demon army, unaware of whats happening gets reality checked by random [hero strong] girl that cuts 2 of his fingers off, also ominous shit goes down in hero Hibiki side.

why hes acting like that: Mc cant speak hyuman [yes hYuman] and thus magic writes, also suddenly having 2 less fingers is a significant emotional event, and that's why he seems 'drunk'
further, while Mc is super op he is still more or less a squishy mage who needs magic reinforcement, and that girl is strong or stronger than the demon generals, like baldy in the chapter

@Kanol I think you've kinda missed the point of my post there. I'm not saying that there is no way that she isn't a threat. I'm saying she -shouldn't- be a threat. I get the difference in experience and all that, but experience can only do so much against something that literally just doesn't play by the rules, and as the story has noted, is pushing on 'diety' levels of power. Yes maybe the MC doesn't know how to fight right with his powers...but with all that's happened that's like guy getting kidnapped at least 3 times in his past, and still going "You know...I don't think I need to learn how to avoid getting kidnapped." Any reasonable person would've learned how to use this power to fight, especially since he knows the people he has chosen to protect are unfairly discriminated against and attacked on sight...how did he plan to protect them if he doesn't learn how to fight with his power?

Edit: In short I'm saying the only reason she's a 'threat' is because the author decided the MC is too dumb to train in actual combat (despite him being trained to kill in Japan) so that he doesn't have enough experience for this fight to not be a threat.

It’s just sooo slow in the setup. Almost to the point where I’m forgetting plot points from three months back.
