Douche bag male lead: “No, I don’t deserve to love you after (some legitimately horrible shit they did of their own volition for selfish reasons and has never even remotely been punished for)”

Female lead who I guess has brain worms: “It’s okay, because I can tell you’re actually a good person.”

Male lead after being forgiven: "In spite of never showing a shred of compassion, self-awareness, or empathy before this point, I recognize that your decision to not hold me even the slightest bit accountable for my awful actions is supremely benevolent and so I vow to now become a completely different person even without having any sort of introspection or personal journey to get there."

I’ve read like, maybe 3 manga that ACTUALLY satisfyingly punished a character for doing something shitty, had them genuinely reflect on their behaviors, and actually organically changed their behavior before they’re forgiven.

yeah she's not even villainess. she's just innocent girl with privilege that didn't know anything about Outside world or even some common sense. but you can sure she isn't evil or have vile heart. she just can't honest to herself and express is.

the dude on the other hand..... anyone want to join the hunt?

Bro you’re missing the point. He doesn’t care about her happiness beyond making sure she stays for the marriage. And once it goes through? No reason to maintain the act, a divorce is WAY more difficult than breaking an engagement. He’s trapping her.

She very clearly wants to break the engagement (which is clearly something that is doable since him and the brother are both concerned about it). He does not give a shit about what she wants or what would make her happy, he wants a marriage to a powerful woman so he’s consistently ignoring her wishes to pursue his own benefit.

Like I don’t get how you don’t see that as manipulation? She’s an extremely sheltered and naive girl so he’s lying about who he is, what he wants, and playing the role of a “prince” to keep her locked down until the wedding bells sound. They aren’t “getting to know eachother” because he hasn’t been honest from the jump. He’s studying her like a lab rat so he can get power and wealth while she’s earnestly trying to be a better person.
For those of us super into reading the shoujosei romance fantasy (and villainess) genres this is probably raising huge alarm bells BC several series settings are legit started with this kind of a relationship that they either escape from - or reform the other partner.

Generally though him going to kiss the duke's daughters hand in chapter 2(?) and only being interrupted by his friend, stringing her along by pretty clearly intentionally getting her favour, is soooooo not okay when he has a fiance.

But HE has the good public image so even if Rose complained or threw a fit he would only benefit from it. And people would defend him as polite or a perfect gentleman. Honestly he has some big character development to go through before I'd feel at all happy for her to marry him, and you can see that from the way his own friend, and her family react to him who all knows his true personality.

It's a great set up though, but the poor girl is going to have a lot of emotional injuries if (when)she finds out his true intentions and true personality.

Interesting...

I'm in for the possible drama. He'll fall deeply inlove with her making him regret some choices he made, then the "misunderstanding" where she'll discover his intentions.

Then yada yada yada she'll forgive him and happily ever after. Or the second lead comes in and steals her away. Yes I'm ok with that too.

Huh, so I called it back in chapter one. Neither of them are being honest, but for very different reasons. And in this case it's an even worse misunderstanding: Rose wants to be a better person while believing that Rein deserves better than to be married off to her as some political pawn.

Meanwhile Rein has yet to realize that Rose isn't naive but rather "pure" (in the sense that there's no malice nor ill intent behind her actions) and sees her as a political pawn for his as of yet unknown plans. To him she's just being stubborn and vain, her inability to communicate (and implied biases against royalty) preventing him from realizing she's trying to be kind. They're unintentionally playing against each other with no idea the other is working in opposition to them.

Oh it will be fun when Rein realizes that Rose is actually trying to improve as a person and live up to the expectations of a princess. And then the inevitable firestorm when Rein's plans are inveiled, most likely AFTER he's genuinely fallen for her. But for now we get to laugh at the both of them. Rein in particular as he fumbles in trying to deal with a well-meaning tsundere.

After giving this some more thought, I agree with some of the posts since I visited the thread.

So, he's trash. Up to this point he didn't really do anything BAD, but he plans to. Because he plans to marry her just for her title, to play with her feelings, to use her. And he also kinda despises her "for having an easy life". These are all very bad warning signs, and his plans are very bordering on the sociopath cliff.

There is also a significant chance he did some very shitty things to reach the point he is right now. I wouldn't put it past the author to make him a borderline criminal, then "redeemed by love".
Or maybe he just played with some other ladies or similar. I will point out to you all, the other guy WARNS him not to "Lay a hand on her before the marriage". Which leads me to believe he might have done this to other women in the past.

But yes, this is a romance manga so we're getting a romance. He's going to fall in love and all of that.

But.. will we have a convincing character growth? Will we have significant amends, and/or consequences for whatever he did and his plans? Or will he just "be forgiven"? Because THAT would be even worse in many respects.

Great, yet another creepy male love interest in a shoujo manga.

How original.😒
now you said it i start to see it, there is indeed lot of real creep on shoujo manga. Like the one with OL and her kouhai

the creepy boundary for woman is hard to understand. Probably the line is not the act but the face
