Just because they have this special innate ability to automatically purify the miasma by just being there does not diminish the important role they have to play in this world. They are being compensated/funded through the taxes/donation because they have value in this society. For this world to prosper, these saints must be supported.
They are the only ones capable of doing this so it deserves respect as well.
Although they can automatically purify doesn't mean that the world is automatically purified everywhere all at once either. Because they are funded by taxes and donations, they would have to be responsible for meeting the society's expectations in fulfilling their role. They would have to travel to many places to ensure that places are purified and I'm sure that their role is also important for diplomatic relations between countries. This is in itself a job. They are not doing nothing.

But you don't feel bad to make people pay for your miracles-magic gems?
You're supposed to be saviors not capitalists lol

@stunfire it is not a job, it is a duty, you apply for and accept a job, a duty is put on you. There is no sense of accomplishment, when they tell you that you just need to keep breathing. They could just as easily have sold it as a job if they said that their responsibility was to tour the world, on a diplomatic mission, but they didn't, so the last Saint spent sixty years just holed up in her embassy.

The protagonists were presented with an arrangement when they first came which they accepted at the time.
It could be the easiest job in the world, it would be still be a job.
Just because someone would do it for free anyway doesnt mean that someone cant pay for for it and turn it into a job.

@stunfire the arrangement they agreed to was just for the sale of the magic stones, a natural byproduct of them living in that world, and maybe for living in the Saint residence. It's still not a job, it's an imposition, because they are expected to be monitored at all times. But don't just take my word for it, a similar job exists here on Earth, labs and hospitals buy poop from healthy donors. Just sign up to be paid for something you do naturally anyway, and see how productive you feel as they put restrictions on your lifestyle.

"But it was God's Will" and this is why this world needs Blasphemy.
Becouse clearly this "God" is an incompetent self-entitled pig brat, that could put its omnipotence up on its ass.

Also I can't avoid the feeling that the king want to use them as a political tool. It's the only way all the idiotic restrictions they put on them (as "can't go in town without proper arrangments (but fine with a disguise)" in the previous chapter) can make the slightest bit of sense.

Things are wort what people are willing to pay for them

Take your CO2 example how much are people willing to pay for carbon credits?

As for that country just let Miasma flow into it till they have a revolution

Damn this chapter was disappointing. Just as I was celebrating have decently mature women as MC’s I get bombarded by the most juvenile characters and conflicts...

And that’s forgetting how hypocritical it is for entitled monarchist brats to be criticizing someone getting payed to exist; at least the saints are necessary to existence 😑
