I agree that for the main characters, they feel the need to earn their own living based on their past experience of their work life but when they came to this new world, they were given a job: to purify the miasma. It may feel like they don't actually have to work particularly hard but it is still a job and they are being compensated by this world by covering their living expenses plus allowance.
That is not a hand out, which is what those nobles frame it as.
The MCs downplay this purification role and say that they use the money they earn themselves from selling stones or producing food items. If that is what they are interested in pursuing, good for them but they use those examples to prove they are not bums. This clearly tells me that they view the task of purification of miasma is not a 'real' job but those other pursuits are 'real' jobs. In a way it seems like they agree with the stuck up nobles.
It also reinforces the idea that whatever they do is not enough, they have to overcompensate to prove their worth which I don't agree with.
