Just gotta say, this has become my favorite series that I read the SECOND there's a new chapter out. I love the horror vibes and how there's still so much mystery in everything, even when they think they've got everything figured out.

Also, Shoutout to Maki17 for uploading every chapter since like ch 6, you a real one!

Why? What about it was bad?
I'm trying to decide if I want to read it.
I'm totally biased, but you should read it. You should read it for the atmosphere, the mystery and the spooks. Take all I'm saying with a pinch of salt though, as I haven't read it for like, 3 years I think. Also if you're interested in slow burn yuri.

Did it really "fall off hard" at some point?

They're back. I love them so much. More theories about the other side. Also Sorawo and Toriko are both useless gays. Kozakura being forced to third wheel is so funny. And yes, I get you Toriko, massage chair is heaven.

this is a very decent, albeit sometimes too dragged out mystery / supernatural manga with two protagonists at the center.

however, this is not yuri.
i just finished chapter 49 and there is still nothing there.
if you're looking for a half decent yuri, don't read this.
i hope they remove the yuri tag from this.

This is either bad bait or you're manga-only. As someone who is caught up to the novels, it's slow burn yuri. Please have some patience.

Ditto what Areodax said, but it should also be noted that the manga adaption is going a lot more slowly than the novels were (which again, were already slow burn). The manga’s been going on for 6 and a half years, but so far has only adapted what took the novels 2 and a half years to cover. The manga says “volume 14” but we’re not even done with Volume 4 of the novels, and Volume 9 of the novels came out last year in Japanese and is coming out in English a couple months from now.
Prismatic, and anybody else tired of waiting, just read the novels. Major spoilers on what’s in the source material, if you need more convincing:
we are fast approaching the first kiss scene: it’ll be within this File, probably 2 or 3 more chapters depending on how they pace things. Also, they’ve fucked in Volume 8 of the novels, which the manga is less than halfway to. So, if you want that without waiting another 7 years, seriously just read the novels.

Where can I start with the novel?

Where can I start with the novel?
Gonna have to buy the ebooks. A good place is here: https://j-novel.club/series/otherside-picnic but you can also find them on the iBook app if you have an apple device, and probably more places, but I haven’t needed to check for other places.
If you’re asking where to start in the novels themselves, the manga is almost done adapting Volume 4, so when this “File” is done in a few chapters, you can start with volume 5 of the novels.

thanks for the info, but i'm really manga only.
and seeing that this is basically slow-motion x1000, i'm going to pass on this.
i cannot wait 20 years on one manga to see a little bit of love development.
even now, all caught up, there is no chance anything will happen anytime soon (romantically), so again, they should remove the yuri tag.
it's genuinely a decent manga, but still a horrendous yuri.

The manga is close to some important development, it’s just not close to catching up with the novels. The manga will be at the
first of several kiss scenes
In like a couple of chapters, depending on how the next few chapters play out.
It’s just the
sex scenes
That’ll take forever to get to.
Also, you’ve got a Homura pfp, so I figure you’d be used to yuri where the romance is more shown not told? Why’d what you’ve seen of UraPi be any different?

What you've done here is read the first chapter of a book and immediately discard it. If you aren't willing to give something a chance why bother making a public review. Sorry you didn't bother doing your research, that's no warrant for attacking something. This being said I HAVE read the LNs and this is one of my favorite yuri series' of all time. I rarely reread LNs but this series I continuously reread. Sorawo is an incredibly complex character and piecing her past into how she acts and thinks is not only done really well on Miyazawa's part but also makes an enticing read. It brings out a thrill of decrypting an unreliable narrator that I don't get to experience too often because it's rarely done right. The romance between Sorawo and Toriko is also written quite well and I feel happens at the exact pace it needs to.
Tl;dr: do your research before you speak please. The yuri tag stays. You've said your piece, please leave
