Nah, in ch 168, they decided that they still need spears to hunt bears, axes for wood and crossbows (because Hild). It was only swords that they decided to ban. But historically speaking, swords were used more as sidearms anyway. Wars in the past were usually fought with spears or something long. Swords were usually used when the spear broke or something.

Where did the nice pirates come from? Did I miss something?

All the people complaining should just stop reading the manga. There are plenty of other manga out there if you just want to read people killing each other with a grimdark atmosphere. The author doesn't owe you anything and won't change the story just because you whine, you know? It just shows you totally missed ALL the actual themes and messages of the earlier part of the manga. Newsflash, it was always about pacifism and finding peace (inner and external).

@hollyguild The pirates are probably new settlers who accepted to give up on their swords, to contrast with the guy at the end of the chapter who doesn't want to.

Axes for wood chopping are completely useless as weapons of war though. They're way too heavy. Inversely, war axes are too thin to be useful as chopping tools. It wouldn't make sense to ban wood chopping axes.

Same with spears. Hunting spears are very different from war spears. But you are correct, that swords were not the main weapon of war in any period of history.
