i find either can have a more romantic implication or none depending on context.

While I understand partner being romantic is dependent on context, I was comparing it to "someone who understands you" which has has pretty no romantic connotations, at least in my opinion, and pointing to the difference.

As for romantic possibilities, I'm mostly in the same boat as you preferring either no partner or a female partner for MC.
