From a literary standpoint, cannibalism has always had a huge place in female homoeroticism and depictions of sapphic desire. Between this and the tragedy tag, I would be shocked and oddly disappointed if that wasn't the ending to this series. What's truly sad is Hinako's desire for death is driving Shiori to become more human and thus worsen the imapct of her departing.
Shiori at the beginning of the series would probably not have felt as lonely if Hinako died compared to the Shiori of now who would probably be so broken as to regret becoming human at all.
