I feel like stories involving gb and sex change has always toed the line between comedic and actual discussions on trans identity/issues as well as general "what is masculinity/feminity" debates as well. Granted, more often than naught, its usually a male character as the start and ends with them embracing being a girl because it ends up becoming a "straight" romance; kanojo ni series/boku girl/Sekainohate de aimashou. This is one of the rare ones where its a girl turning into a boy, and there's a lot more nuance to the entire situation.
I'm more used to the isekai/rencarnation type of gender bender, which is basically straight men's fantasy of the "female experience", if you can call it that. Most of these works end up GL because the author and audience still view it as a heteronormative fantasy instead of experimenting with the theme of gender.

the trans/puberty blocker discussion is very interesting but all I can think about is how

her mom fucking sucked!!!
Like what the shit, controlling as fck when Minori was small, and then up and disappeared for work one day, hard to contact/meet irl.
She's basically absentee from Minori's life, and the moment she got back she's gone right back to control Minori's life/decisions?? Such a shit parent.

anw, thanks for the chapter.

I'm guessing no character in this story actually knows a non-cis trans person because they're stuck in that mindset of "snip snip" which is like, 90s level understanding of trans body issues. A lot of people these days don't even worry about the bottom half without much thought as to the cost or anything. They're just happy being their gender and sex.
In Japan to change your gender legally you need to "snip snip." Thus the talk about family register. A bit of a stretch that the laws would still be the same in a world with magic gender change.

This is what's actually messed up about the mom. The surgery and other options aside, she simply does not care what her daughter wants or lets her become her own person, and constantly hurts her in ways that screams narcissism.

Does Japan not have puberty blockers ?
assuming that there are trans ppl in this story that don't just suddenly 'wake up' with the 'disorder', i think there should be all the usual medicines the world would have

Tho, wonder if there'd be some 'resentment' or 'competition' if it's a 'limited resources' kinda thing. Like a "we need/deserve this more than that other group"

My problem is the lack of science in explaining the Sex Change Disorder. If there was an in-depth explanation, using IRL knowledge, of how the Sex Change Disorder works, I wouldn't have a problem with it. As the explanation does not exist, it is something that happens overnight, it breaks my suspension of disbelief when the treatment for the Sex Change Disorder is something completely rooted in IRL knowledge. But that's just me, most people don't seem to have a problem with it, which is totally fine.
Hence why they classify it as disease (The instant change kind, not the IRL trans); in-universe people don't know how or why it even happened yet. Obviously many people will have issues with it because the change gender without their consent, and again because nobody know how or why it happened they have no clue how to re-reverse it, hence why our MC (and other involuntary magically made trans) are using IRL surgery and hopefully hormone treatment too; it's the only known way for them to cure it.

Anyway, ignoring that weirdo above us, I don't think this manga's handing out any sort of misinformation, as far as I can tell from what friends have told me this is somewhat the thought process a lot of trans women end up going through on their quest to transitioning. I'm sure to Rinko, who's had a penis for like a month or something, isn't quite keen on the vague conclusion of "cutting it off" that she made from the video. All we can do is support this girl goddamn 😭
Yeah I really really hope that the word for word copying repetition of American Republican transphobic rhetoric is just a bait for showing the truth: gender affirming care like puberty blockers, hormones, a safe route to legal transition, and protections to let people socially transition is the most effective and safest way to treat gender dysphoria and let people feel more at peace with their bodies.

Edit: changed copying to repetition

It's weird to me that the starting point of this is whether she wants to get vaginoplasty. Like you can do HRT and top surgery and stop there if you're comfortable that way
she shouldn't need top surgery at this point (unless she became completely flat but it'd be a lot easier to just wear a padded bra as opposed to her having a giant chest and wanting do a reduction but she's that'd be if she wanted to look more masculine versus how she originally looked like)

although it would be an amusing one shot/bonus light hearted story within the universe if someone with like double d boobs changed overnight and then like "wow this much lighter i'm not going back to bras anymore"

The conservative messaging is not copying americans, Japan itself is uber conservative, far more than even USA.

This manga is wild lmao. I literally have no idea how the author wants me to interpret the information given. It's obviously social/political commentary at this point but I'm still a bit lost.

IMO this is still all setup to a larger confrontation/discussion with the male* love interest, where I'm assuming it'll get spicy. I'm gonna need some sunglasses so I don't get flashbanged for that chapter.

It’s either something the author knows about and the characters just don’t yet (and will discover in a later chapter) or the author is just ignorant which would suck and I really hope isn’t true. :korone:
Well, it seems like all of the characters around Rinko so far (with the possible exception of Yuuki) are ignorant, so either it's an intentional choice by the author to reflect the average person's knowledge on the subject, or it's a reflection of the author's own ignorance. Hopefully the former.

Either way, it's pretty clear that Rinko has been really let down by her support network so far. Poor girl. It's even affecting her education and physical health (night terrors). I can't help but feel a bit confused by the lack of professional counselling and medical attention she's received, considering this condition is supposed to be somewhat common in this world. Why didn't she have someone sit down with her and walk her through all of her options moving forward when it happened? She was just given a dinky little brochure and sent out the door.

Absolutely. I think everyone who is saying, "What the mom said is correct" is missing the fact that she could have given her whole, "You need to do it because you want to" speech and still signed the consent form if she really felt that way. Just tell her before she leaves to make sure she gives serious thought about who she is and what she wants, and that she'll stand behind either choice. That would be a supportive parent giving good advice.

Instead, she said, "lol, get fucked, I know what's right for you better than you do" even though she wasn't able to even recognize her own daughter a few minutes ago, and flew back to the other side of the world, leaving Rinko with no way to get the required consent that she needs. She misgenders Rinko multiple times and finishes off with telling Rinko that she'll never be a woman (you can argue that's not what she actually meant, but she definitely wasn't tactful about it, especially considering how much distress Rinko is currently under. We see the effects of piling it on in this chapter). Not to mention that Rinko was specifically requesting for HRT and the mom jumps straight to GAS as a scare tactic. Pretty awful.

The first red flag for me in this manga was the fact that Rinko's attraction to girls was attributed to the sudden increase in testosterone. This is kind of a common trope in GB manga, but it's an archaic misconception, and we've known for decades that testosterone does not promote attraction to women in neither men nor women. It merely increases the sexual drive for whatever preference the person was born with (i.e. developed prenatally).

The manga did keep it vague enough that I've been holding out hope that it was a misunderstanding on the hopeful Rinko's part. That the brochure actually just meant that they would experience increased sex drive and Rinko took it to imply that it was towards the (post-transformation) opposite sex, and not just in general. The manga wasn't clear if the text boxes were coming from the brochure verbatim, or if they were Rinko's interpretation of them. That, combined with some other dialogue about Rinko potentially liking boobs beforehand, and not having a physical reaction to boys (i.e. Yuuki) made me hopeful that Rinko was actually just a closeted lesbian, and that she was eventually going to be forced to work through her sexuality along with her gender identity.

But with the way everything else has been developing in these past two chapters, it's starting to look more and more like the manga is just going to commit to this outdated version of biological determinism, and that the author just believes that sexuality is determined by your genitals, like a surprisingly large amount of other mangaka. That would be largely uninteresting to me, and pretty disappointing considering the panelling, art, and comedy have all been great so far.

But there's still plenty of room to turn this around and work through these as misunderstandings. There's a ton of really interesting places to take this story still. Personally, I want to see Rinko decide to continue living as a girl while accepting the new changes to her body. Maybe it's my yuri brainrot, but I got the feeling that they might be hinting at Mao being interested in Rinko as a girl. I think that would be really interesting to see them try and work through Rinko's challenges together as a pair, and contrast that with Subaru's interest in Rinko as a (potential) man, as well as Yuuki's choice to begin living as a man. But again, the manga's been pretty vague with its intentions. It could be that it was setting up a love triangle between Rinko and Mao towards Yuuki as well. That could be either interesting or not, depending on how it's gone about.

Either way, I haven't given up on this manga yet, but my optimism is starting to wear thin a bit.

Ah, I see someone still has hope after reading the 807249265th heteronormative genderbend manga, you must have impressive mental fortitude.
