I'm not sure how tests in this academy works, but Deborah's a woman used to taking modern math tests, so she probably wrote her intermediate steps in the provided solving space.

Which will look absolutely nothing like the calculations of the other students, because the people in this setting are Bad At Math.

I suppose if her math notation is sufficiently different that the people in this world can't recognize it, and think of it as drawing numbers and lines in weird places, that somehow scribble to the correct answers, that would explain why they can pass it off as cheating. Most of the current symbolic notation for math operations is pretty historically recent, after all.

I can answer that.
Basically, it's mentioned in the book that the test have 3 parts, the questions, the answer sheet and a blank sheet.
The students only return the answer sheet without any calcul in it, just the answer.

tho this is a fictional story, and the falsely accused as a cheater plotline is a great way to both progress the story aswell as show everyone that not everything is what it seems at first, thus allowing for a "redemption" for deborah in the eyes of the other characters

Well, this is a medieval setting with male gender supremacy still rampant. In such an era, even unproven rumors can bring someone down due to the biases of people's minds. Basically, they only want to hear what they want to hear, no matter how ridiculous it may be.
