We now have a word for what you’re describing here: “slopgem” - trope-heavy nonsense that is still fun to read for a lot of people and doesn’t really piss anyone off like true slop does.
Weeelllll.... The only reason I take issue with that assessment is because roughy 99% of manga and anime are written to be very inoffensive and wide-reaching. So by definition, most mangas and animes would fall into the slopgem chategory. I mean just look at the ratings on this site. You'll legit struggle to find mangas below a 5.0 rating. Most sit at a comfortable 7 or 8, despite being slightly below to slightly above average. These are the definition of slop, bt you'll find the same "peak" or whatever comments there. Now I know I am arguing with definitions, but a slopgem imo should be smth that is trope-heavy somewhat nonsense, which nonetheless takes a certain risk and thus isn't enjoyed by many. I'd say nieche manga and anime should be the definition of slopgem. An example: Meikyuu no Ou / King of the Labyrinth. I wouldn't say it's great, but there will be people, who will enjoy the hell out of it, like me haha.
It makes more sense with the latest few chapters. He was someone they not only respected and loved but they all saw his talent with the sword as so incredible that he'd go down in history. Hearing someone you care about say they were okay with dying even if it was for your sake is one thing but hearing someone you idolise and respect almost saying they would be okay throwing their talent away for you cause they don't value themselves all that much?
You shouldn’t take the ratings on mangadex at face value. They use a really weird algorithm to calculate. They aren’t truly representative of overall reader opinion. I can’t remember the exact algorithm they use but when I found out about it I remember thinking how weird and utterly misleading it was about the quality of manga.
Really? It's not dependent on the ratings given to the manga by the people? I've always thought people just couldn't rate things on this site well. Do they value high ratings more or smth? I really don't understand, because ratings should just be averages. There shouldn't even be an algorithm in its calculation process. But regardless of how the ratings on this site are calculated, I am sticking to my definition. I do think that the vast majority of manga are straight up average slop and the true slopgems are fine-good nieche mangas.
The only thing that trash does better is shove tits in your face. This one actually has the mc deal with the repercussions of his disability and actions as well as actually goes into the heroine's psychology that isnt just "hero love"
