There's the popular Mane 'n Tail brand that people have been using for both humans and horses (and the company even advertise it as such). My guess is our author knew of the brand and... decided to include the gag into it

well, it is said early on that Mia using the horse shampoo was good for her hair, so could easily be they didn't know about the brand, just that it works well for humans

Oh yes, in-story Mia and Anne totally doesn't know it's actually for horses. Some of the people around em eventually noticed but they let their delusions run away and thought it was intentional so they never brought it up to her.
I'd recommend the LN too but I'd personally advise you to either start from volume 2 or the middle of Vol 1.
No hate to the author but I personally didn't find the first hundred pages engaging and I remember skipping around. I eventually did go back to read the first volume but other than more background for the Ludwig situation (which wasn't done too well tbh) and the chef one, there wasn't much I missed.
However, Volume 2 is my favorite volume, and I'd really recommend giving it a read from the top. Enjoy!
It's funny to us readers, but considering how Mia's entire (second) life she's been motivated by nothing but survival at all costs, putting herself directly in harm's way by joining an active military expedition was definitely not an easy choice for her to make.
