Maybe it was a sign that even in Japan, "reading is fun" could be a thing, instead of just "read a lot to get into a good school". It's not like back in the 60's or 70's there would have been exceedingly much competition for the children or youth's attention, unlike today when folks are just surfing the net/social media or playing games, with reading books having suffered a massive decline.
