Nowadays, there are many comic adaptations and dramas turned into manga, so as an entertainment fan, you'll want to keep up with the hottest manga news. 'The Television Manga Department' brings you just that. This time, we introduce an episode from 'The Villainess's Bride' (published by Bungeishunju), which is currently serialized in 'Seasons.' When author Akiko Kawano posted this work on X (formerly Twitter) on April 13, it received many likes and comments. In this article, we interview Akiko Kawano about the behind-the-scenes of her creative process and her attention to detail.
Karina, who thought she had acted like a proper queen, ends up having her engagement broken off.
Karina, who was supposed to become the bride of the first prince of the Kingdom of Cloria, has her engagement broken off and is exiled to a frozen wasteland. Having always tried to conduct herself "properly" as a future queen, Karina believes her younger sister Aurora has bewitched the prince and swears revenge on them both. The frozen wasteland is said to be "the far north where monsters dwell," and she hears mysterious sounds and howling in the distance.
Determined to investigate the source, Karina steps outside with only a small amount of food. She realizes the sound is an avalanche, but then spots a small wolf nearby. Though she initially points her sword at the trembling wolf, she ends up giving it some food. The wolf eats a little and quickly leaves. Right after that, an arrow flies toward Karina, aiming for her...
Readers of this work have commented things like, "The development is fresh," "It reminds me of Beauty and the Beast," "I want to know what's going on inside Karina's heart," and "These two seem like they'll have an interesting relationship."

Where did the inspiration for this story come from?
Before creating this work, I had been involved in many so-called 'villainess' stories. In those kinds of stories, there are often characters like the heroine (the rival to the protagonist) or the prince (the protagonist's former fiancé) who end up being exiled as a result of choosing to abandon the villainess protagonist. Personally, I became interested in 'what kind of story unfolds for a character after they are condemned and exiled.' That interest was the starting point that led to the creation of this work's protagonist, Karina, and the other protagonist she meets after being exiled, Reshtoka.
In this work, the wolf that Karina feeds makes a very strong impression. Are there any 'points you focused on' or 'aspects you want readers to pay attention to!' when drawing this work?
The characters in this work all have something hidden inside them, but they are people who cannot easily express it outwardly. Karina, too, actually holds many feelings, but because she cannot show them on the surface, she often lies to herself as well. I would love for readers to pay attention to who is harboring what thoughts and feelings, and how they sublimate them throughout the story. Also, since this is a story centered around girls after all... I pay particular attention to each of their cute gestures and expressions. I hope readers will take notice of that as well.
If you have any particular favorite scenes or lines, please tell us about them along with the reasons why.
A scene I particularly like is the one in Chapter 1 where Reshtoka is standing in front of the collapsed Karina. A double-page spread really makes an impact, and I feel very satisfied when it's finished. It's also the first step where the story begins to unfold, so I like it very much. As for lines I like, I'm fond of Karina's lines in Chapter 11 of Volume 2 overall. Although this scene mostly consists of Karina's ugly jealousy, it's also where Karina is able to express part of her true feelings for what is arguably the first time, so it's personally very memorable. Also, though her appearances are few, I like almost all of Juno's lines.
Please tell us about any things you are careful about or conscious of when thinking up the story.
I'm quite impatient, so I tend to rush to draw the answers right away (laughs). But what these girls need is to grow as individuals through encounters and dialogue, so I have to be careful to let that develop slowly... (though I feel I'm not very good at it yet... tears). Honestly, I'd like the pace to be even slower, but... before I know it, I'm moving things along at a brisk pace... This is something I need to work on.
In Akiko Kawano's works, I feel that even the smallest details—such as hair, accessories, and interior settings—are drawn with great care. Are there any particular things you focus on or are especially conscious of when illustrating?
When it comes to my artwork, I feel like 'I should be able to do better...!!' so it's difficult...! I try to focus on drawing in a way that feels good to me as much as possible. Honestly, I wish I could draw the girls cuter... more sparkly and shining... I also want to add more decorative details... But I suppose this is another area where I need to keep improving...
Please tell us about your future prospects and goals.
At this point, I still haven't been able to depict much about the world of this story, so if I have the chance to explore it further in the future, I'd like to incorporate those aspects into the narrative as well. My goal is to continue the series for as long as possible! And it would be wonderful if I could reach a point where I can create a work that I can genuinely feel satisfied with myself.

This... How did the prince conveniently get passed over on the selection of slaughter. That said, I'm glad that even Reshtoku realized that the revenge was half-bake, even if it means bloodshed.

Reshtoka's smothering love being a culture feature is a new reveal that I'm surprised at. It seems like she doesn't know that she's following the story's plot at the moment.
I do like her genuine anxiety over Karina. She's so in love and feels powerless.
Interesting that everyone in the village didn't think Reshtoka would ever find someone that she wanted. Was that because she was gay or because she just didn't have anyone she was into? Either way it seems to amplify her fears of losing Karina.
ALSO, that wedding outfit is so adorable on Reshtoka it's amazing

The problem isn't that the revenge wasn't good enough! It's that she never wanted revenge in the first place! She convinced herself that what she wanted was revenge, but then she got it and she just felt nothing because it was never what she actually wanted.

This doesn't really solve much in this situation. Karina doesn't know what's wrong, she doesn't understand why taking revenge wasn't good enough for her, she is as confused about her own feelings as Reshtoka is about them.
