A novel is the script for the movie you create in your head. Reading fiction is something like a skill, or at least it takes practice. If you didn't pick up the habit as a kid reading animorphs or goosebumps or such, then you would have to practice until you get it, because it isn't easily acquired as a teen or adult.

I don't judge because I have one son who never reads novels and one who devours them in two languages. They both are just fine in my opinion; it's a personal taste.

It's not going to change and if that puts you off you best drop it now. One of Harold's core challenges is that no matter what he thinks, what comes out will always come across as rude. The only ones that can tell otherwise are the ones that have seen through his actions and know his intents don't line up with his words. This is not about muscle memory; it's a forced translation layer of which he has no control of.

In the original game, Harold's mistreatment of Erika drives Erika to join the hero's party and eventually kill Harold. Harold does not know Erika knows his secrets so he is still operating under the assumption Erika has no reason to like him.
