My man, there's a subculture of gay men who call themselves "nee-san" so asuming gender is even more confusing.
Lolwut, what kind of an argument is that? Surely you understand that when 99 out of 100 times "nee-san" would refer to a woman, it's not strange to assume someone is talking about a woman when your only context clues are the name "Erza" and people referring to her as "nee-san"?

Of course your assumption can be wrong, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't a fair assumption given the context. People make these kind of assumptions all the time in every day speech.

If a story has an off screen character called Takeshi, you also wouldn't bat an eye when the English translation would just use male pronouns just to make the lines sound more natural. You wouldn't have made this argument had a "regular" woman appeared, so the assumption was valid but may be wrong (depending on the character's own preferences).

Ah yes, a moment of diarrhea before shit hits the fan, if spoilers were to be believed. I just wish the diarrhea wasn't an ugly dude acting like a woman. At least he's not as bad as "Anna" from the Behemoth story. Gourmet Fran expressions this time though, so it wasn't a waste of a chapter.

It's Japan, and a common trope when a female character is introduced just to be killed off.
That's only when a female character joins a new unknown party, and the characters of the party have generic cliche type of designs. Plus the theme of the series focus on those kind-off stuff.

TenKen doesn't have such themes, nor the characters in that party had any of those cliche desins, so it's shouldn't be expected.

Plus Inina had been working with the party for sometime, and they are certified guild party whose job is to help low-ranked ones to grow as mentioned in the chapter.

Was I the only one NOT surprised by Erza's appearance? With that narrative it was pretty predictable.
I wss more surprised by the dapper old man being the guild master.

It's not even mean-spirited, IMO.
Another comment in the prev pages mentioned that a lot of it comes from the cultural differences behind how Japan has mostly accepted okama as a subset of people.
Their depiction in media is usually played for laughs, but I don't think I've ever seen a 100% negative character being an okama.
So far, they're mostly wholesome weirdos who are unusually strong?
I've been reading reading manga and light novels since the early 90s, and think I've run into a couple okama villians. NGL, the one depicted here fits the vague memory, except i remeber there being big spiked shoulder pads and cod piece...

As for character strength it's all over the place. Some like Margaret in growth cheat but jobless are fairly strong but mostly harmless, OTOH Seifin the Dazzling in Arafoo Kenja isn't a machoman crossdresser, but is still a highly promiscuous S Ranked bisexual who wants to add the MC to his harem.

Old dude who showed up at Fran’s campsite during her travels to the city.

Showed up again to help her during a situation when entering the city where she was being harassed by the usual Adventurer Guild Thug Group.
Ah, thanks. Turns out I somehow missed reading the previous chapter (96), and was trying to find him in the deeper archives. At least I can catch up now.

Is it me or these nauseating characters are becoming more and more common? Always feels like the author is having a laugh at the expense of the readers.

Okama-trope was not new though? We have one that's arguably one of the most badass rider in Gaim, even. And that's 13 years ago.

Nice to see the comment section being so normal though, because this trope isn't exactly new in any way.

Inina is cute, I hope we get to see her more for another Black Cat member
