I'd guess it's because the new character brings out a different side of him beyond just being the "cool, competent coworker". Now he's more of a character instead of just "the guy who got rejected by Misato and has no other choice but to still be around".

I mean within the span of the chapter the girl gave up and chose to root for Misato. So really all it came down to was fucking with Shimizu's head. Which was a fuckin' treat to the point it had me laughing out loud.

Disappointed we didn't get to see any development during the business trip in Osaka when they were alone. I thought there'd be one more chapter to that mini arc to close things off. This one just slid right back into things with little mention; I had to double check that I didn't skip a chapter. This was fun I guess. Simple fun.
