From this, I take it that Aurora played an active role, so it wasn't just a one-sided effort by the prince against Karina, huh? Even though, in her own mind, Aurora had good intentions, as the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Thanks for the chapter!

oh boy oh boy oh boy! I fully expected Reshtoka to be standing behind Aurora once the camera zoomed out from her apology. But unfortunately she's standing a little farther away because of this she didn't hear Aurora talk about the everything.

And so tragedy approaches.

I do not think Aurora dies here. Not with Charlotte even somewhat nearby; she will be intervening if Reshtoka or Aurora make any noise in any confrontation from this point.

That said--I'm unsure as to whether Reshtoka would simply strike without warning. It would make sense; she's a wolftkin, she's hunting Aurora ("personal matters" was a nice obfuscating of that bit from the other wolfkin talking with Karina), and there's no in-story reason for her to try and have a dialogue with Aurora at this point in time. Could be that she strikes, some fluke chance has her miss Aurora fatally, and then the noise from any ensuing fight/flight will alert Charlotte (and hopefully also rouse Eve) and that will prevent Aurora's death.

I do think this clinches Aurora's character--we have enough from her side to see her overall character motivation in full from the start of the story (including flashbacks) to the present: she loves her sister, but knew that he Court would destroy Karina (and she's not wrong), and she took it upon herself to protect Karina in her own way. (Possibly due to always having been protected before by her onee-san; so this is her "paying that back", perhaps.)
Of course...it's not that simple, and she wasn't aware of Karina's own mindset, and how much she begrudged and resented the (as she saw it) special treatment Aurora had received. So when she had even the Prince taken from her--even if that might have been the best-case for Karina, given Orlando's abuse of her--Karina saw it as yet another attack, yet another thing taken from her by the one who'd done it all their lives before.
Knowing this now, could be too late--though I doubt this will see actual tragedy, and no reconciliation between the sisters. But with Reshtoka about to make contact, that should bring both primary groups together, albeit in a hostile & violent context for the foreseeable future. But with Aurora out here with minimal backup, in Reshtoka's back yard, I do think Karina will see this as Aurora once again attempting to take something from her.

But Karina's spiraling is another big point. She's hearing whispers about her again--mirroring and calling back to the whispers of her at the Palace & Court. So that's another point of trauma resurfacing, which I suspect is partly why she trudged off into the woods--she's trapped, once again, in another "Court-like" setting wherein rumors and prejudices abound around her. As she sees herself falling further and further from what she assumes Reshtoka first saw in her, I think her own self-worth is going to continue nose-diving--and she has no one around to catch her in free-fall, either.
Maybe Aurora will step in and help, if all goes perfectly. More likely, she'll make it worse, and things will also strain with Reshtoka as well, in the near-future.

But I do think this is seeing the tension for the three primary characters ratchet up. Karina & Aurora are on a collision course, Reshtoka & Aurora are imminently violent, and Karina & Reshtoka are starting to crumble even as at least one is taking steps to fix things (as she understands them).

Next chapter should be very interesting. Thanks again for the TL work; can't wait for next month.

So does Ciel just like... Stand there in the snow, in case a royal comes past?
You know what? Ciel's actions actually make sense to me.
  • Karina essentially disappeared into the night, which makes following her impossible. So Ciel can only hope that Karina would return on her own.
  • Ciel was the only staff to remain, which shows her loyalty to Karina as opposed to Aurora.
  • While I imagine that Ciel wanted to return to the Kingdom, it's been like a year or so since the avalanche. News of Karina's 'death' or disappearance would've traveled far throughout the kingdom. Judging from the state of the ruined mansion, no one came to investigate. I can only imagine that Ciel came to believe that the Kingdom as a whole cared little about Karina, hence there was no point for her to return.
TDLR: Ciel was/is stuck between a rock and hard place, as her loyalty to Karina kept her from trying to return to the Kingdom, a place that she may know that harbors disdain towards Karina.

From this, I take it that Aurora played an active role, so it wasn't just a one-sided effort by the prince against Karina, huh? Even though, in her own mind, Aurora had good intentions, as the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

It seriously goes back to the age old question... Why the hell did the Prince send assassins in the first place? I mean yeah... the guys is a douche of an ass who's too stupid to even have a shred of dignity or common sense, but his decision to send assassins is still weird even considering all that. Especially when he backed off, when Aurora had requested it...

Overall, things are now getting interesting for me, and I can add Ciel to the list of characters who I sympathize with.

Karina's attachment to Reshtoka has always been of a fickle nature, but to see her latching on to the barest connection she has left with someone, even for all its toxicity, she really seems at the end of her rope as she perceives that connection frayed. Part of me expects her to contemplate very bad ideas.

She was last seen--only by the reader--slowly walking into the forest. And she doesn't have Reshtoka nearby to come find her in the cold.
She also hadn't eaten yet, so empty stomach, nothing but the cloak over her clothing.

So even if Reshtoka and Aurora reach some sort of accord wherein no one dies, if they return to Reshtoka's village, Karina will be missing...so I'm almost more curious for how that goes, than the imminent fight.

stopping the prince from sending assassins after karina?
what kind of misconception is that?
the older sister was already a public enemy before her exile.
lost all social standing and protection that came with it after aurora took it for herself.
please, just let the author clear this up.

Aurora's talking about what she told Orlando in chapter 3. (I guess "3.2" here on MD, pages 18-20).

I think they're talking about before that fact. Aurora had stopped the prince from mobilizing the army against Karina. However, she didn't stop him from sending the first batch of assassins after Karina.

Before chapter 3, Karina was already exiled and left to fend for herself with Ciel as her only companion. It's a question as to whether Aurora knew about the assassins or not prior to chapter 3.

While we can assume that she didn't, it doesn't change the fact that she had essentially sentenced her sister to her death by having the Prince null his engagement to her and exile her. After all, it was only thanks to Reshtoku that Karina had survived, and it's not as if Aurora could've naturally accounted for Reshtoku.

In other words...
Even though, in her own mind, Aurora had good intentions, as the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
This pretty much sums it up perfectly. Aurora had claimed that Karina would've became broken if she remained engaged to the Prince, so she had him exile Karina instead. However in doing so, Aurora had (possibly unknowingly) sentenced Karina to death, because the prince had sent assassins to kill Karina.

Nothing Aurora did made any difference; they sent assassins anyway, and the she-wolf had to save Karina—or else it was game over. Nothing Aurora has done has been of any use.
