Not so sure, since he seems excited to put his mercenary skills on display in martial arts class. I don't think he's ashamed about being a merc so much as saying "don't treat me like a kid, I don't want you to feel responsible for me. I can handle it."

Anyhoo I'm interested in seeing the kids look impressed at acts of violence.

here the MC is the one who challenges the duel,
I think 95% of these cliche in other series are the opposite

you can't expect to not add any cliche at all
him being in the school/academy is already a cliche
the important thing is how unique the series approach those cliches

pretty sure "the past" is about him being a mercenary. He wasn't ashamed of it, he was thinking about it and got excited/bloodthirsty. It's why his smile distorted for a second back then, and the girl felt like she saw something she shouldn't have.
