Yeah I always prefer repentance when it's not unforgivable jackassery. I remember another one kinda like this where the MC was a companion to his Brave (IE: Hero) Girlfriend but she treated him like shit so he fled. In the end she realized what she did was wrong and regretted it deeply and then became extremely remorseful when she thought he died. (it was a ploy by another jackass who totally deserved to get iced) But she ends up getting a happy end. Just not with the MC

I've only read this far as of yet, so I don't know where it'll go from here, but I get the distinct impression Kazuma just accidentally awakened something in Rua. I'm getting flashbacks to Meimei from Seton Academy. I could see this heading into yandere territory, but I'm hoping it'll wind up more like her begging for more insults or offering to be his chair or something.

I too adore redemption and repentance. It's kind of rare for me to find one where a properly bad character has shown real repentance. And I'm always disappointed to look in the comment sections of stories that have it, since it's almost always packed with jerks that won't stop raging that the character didn't instead suffer and get destroyed in every way possible. And even more jerks that declare the story to be absolutely worthless if the hero shows the slightest inclination toward the slightest bit of forgiveness.
