Basically we learn that it was the black plague. His legs have been hidden all this time but the shoes/wraps are removed and we see that his legs are completely black. It's called a witch's curse, but it was caused by the epidemic, essentially.

Damn, that's a rough way to die. But that also means he was doomed since the beginning so kinda pointless journey.
