From Aoi Sekina, the author of My Crush's Crush and Gamers!. The (light novel) series won three awards in the 2026 edition of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!, ranking first overall, as well as placing first in the paperback and new release categories.

Man, I'm torn on this. We have the same author as My Crush's Crush and Boyfriend-kun looking suspiciously feminine, which gives me a sliver of hope, but right you couldn't pay me to be in his shoes. This whole situation feels so unbelievably torturous to be in, I could actually feel my stomach twist in agony.

When I read the description my first thought was "this is a crime in progress." Adult store manager is down bad for his high school girl employee, who has a boyfriend. It makes him seem like the kind of guy to get banned from a Magic: The Gathering tournament. But the story is very self-aware of that set up. I think it's rage bait to draw in the readers.

And how! He's fully aware that it's a forbidden love. And it also looks like everybody knows it and wants him to confess, including his crush and her (probably fake boyfriend who's actually a girl) and I bet every time a new character is introduced the relationship chart will grow confounding. This seems really fun, if a little predictable.

so there's gotta be alot of comedic misunderstandings and twists ig. Though irl this would suck af.

Lots of questions from chapter 1 too:
Is Usa really a male and her bf?
Does she really like Banjo? Since he's "3" and she also called that her suk-pi.
If she does why doesn't she clear the bf thing (if fake), rather, she quadruples down on it in front of him!
If she does why is she egging him to confess to his impossible fake crush.
Did she call him a "chicken"? (Sure af looked like it), if she did, does she know his real feelings or was it just related to his fake crush. If the former, sigh, this loops back to the first two "ifs".
Does Usa also know about his feelings? Can't help but sense some hidden meanings behind what he said, but again, this loops back to why they won't clear it, unless, he also means the fake crush.
Lastly, is the fake shogi crush in any way or form related to usa and the gf. Can't rule out her being 1 of them either with stage names and stuff. Could tie back to one reason why they want to push him to get the fake crush.

Welp, this is all I could think of as of chapter 1. Looking at all the scenarios this could lead to, I think, the FL was dropped as a child and somewhere something went wrong.
