Even if it wasn't a "I want to quit move." by the author (where they might have bribed him continue) - It IS a decent experiment to regain interest in the series because now people who would typically ignore the chapters until they are somewhat curious after a few months to see what the new status quo is/if any new girls were added are now much more likely to check every week to see if any actual progress occurred.

Because the author might truly be tired of writing this, could be out of interesting ideas to motivate himself, and would therefore be ready to end it (and he's already an established mangaka) if the experiment "backfires" and he loses even more interest... He can just wrap it up and move on.

that kinda sounds like blackmail tbh. i simply meant they could've renegotiated the contract. cause if a series brings in good revenue beyond expectations and the author up to this point has only been paid based on past merits, then it's kinda understandable he wants more after the series took off. and companies will obviously sleep on that on purpose so that they retain the extra profits without paying them out to the author if he doesn't actively demand more.

In some ways, I feel like the "Sea Devil" (Ceratias holboelli), the deep sea anglerfish with the bioluminescent lure dangling from its forehead, is the perfect fish match for Kotone considering that the glowing lure is pretty analogous to dangling a 50-yen coin on a string to hypnotize people and also considering that the female Sea Devil, which is the gender you're picturing when we talk about the Sea Devil, attracts tiny males who permanently attach themselves to the female and eventually the combined organism becomes a genetic chimera, very analogous to Kotone's popularity at school except for the chimera part.

The downside of comparing the Sea Devil anglerfish to Kotone is that it's a very ugly fish and is also not one that they can really keep in normal aquariums due to how it can only survive at deep sea pressures.
