The girls in this series fall into two classes: [ul]those about whom one is supposed to laugh, and
those at whom one is supposed to laugh[/ul] Some of the girls are actually in both classes; but, for example, Kotone has only been in the “about” group and not in the “at” group. Originally, Reiko alone was only in the “at” group, though, with time, the reader has been given access to her thoughts, she has been made far more sympathetic. At this stage, some girls, such as the teacher, are each still in both groups, but they're all characters mostly about whom one is to laugh, rather than at whom one is supposed to laugh, with the exceptions of Chiaki and Reiko. They are brought on stage to play the fools. And, whereas we see that Reiko behaves foolishly because she is both naive and up-tight, Chiaki just behaves thoughtlessly. There's no mechanism here for her to move towards capture of Daisuke.
