For people that say why she doesn't report it, especially if you don't know what is actually happening at her house there are things you can't take at face value and multiple reason why she wouldn't want to report it and maybe just power through it till she can finish school and get a job so she can leave.

So if you go to related manga you will know what is happening which leads to some possible reasons, her mother is selling naked pictures of her, forcing her to do it and if she doesn't co-operate she beats the shit out of her.

For now we can assume (and that's all we will be doing since the manga doesn't say things about it but they are mostly possible) she didn't get raped yet (if we trust nothing else happened in some second layer lore under that "related" manga attached to this one) as the mom probably doesn't want to risk it that much, this could create many more risks of someone actually reporting it and connecting the mother to it, while selling pictures is probably mostly anonymous and can give some chances of avoiding jail if you force the child to say what you want. (she would most likely still be found guilty but that could be the reason in her mind)

As for the police we have some things to think about:
- maybe teachers did ask her mom in the past what is happening, her mom can just claim that girl is a problem child, especially if she is a single mom and claim she gets into fights in the area often, maybe that there are some aggressive kids in the area or some other excuse that could lead to teachers not wanting to get involved so much or let their guard down a little when the kid herself is forced to confirm such excuse
(you have to think about what some teachers are like and police, in real life there were many cases of teachers and people in the some area thinking everything was fine while a child was getting abused or raped at home, ofc. to my knowledge it wasn't as extreme where you could see that child's face being in state like that, other than some bruises on the body but i did give some plausible excuses above)

- the girl doesn't want to get police involved because of the pictures, even before she warmed up to the MC that would create a risk of the pictures leaking into the public which could not only destroy her life in the place she lives now but follow her even when they take her away and now adding to that we have MC that she probably doesn't want to know about them either, she might think he would abandon her if he knew too or it's just too shameful

I hope everything is going to be fine in the end but running away at their age will probably alert not only their or at least his parents but also the school and THEN the police will get involved for sure which might help get the problem fixed if they get found and start talking but also start the process mentioned above which she doesn't want.

I think she said something before like that she will get moved away from him or something and wouldn't want that. I can't remember really.
Which is equally strange, if we consider that public transportation exists. Are people less than 21 years old banned from trains?

I'll link it again if necessary, but Japan has had a rising problem with child abuse(reported and otherwise) in the last few years. Many municipalities struggle to verify reports and act on them in a timely manner, with some reports falling through the cracks ending in fatalities for the children involved as well as those who reported the abuse.

Depending on where they live running away may actually be safer.

Why wouldn't the police help when her face is beaten to a pulp
Read a bit about how Japan's law works. It's incredibly sad and I'm 90% certain her mother would get off with a slap on the wrist. It's easy to bash the author but believe me her fright+shitty mother would more than likely fuck her over more

I feel the need to correct quite a lot of misconceptions in this thread.

It's true that in Japan, it used to be pretty difficult for police or any other authorities to intervene. Judge all you like as to whether it's a good or bad thing, but if you lived in Japan for any amount of time, you'd know both social norms and laws skew very heavily towards respecting the family unit and privacy. This can't be emphasized enough, just how taboo it is.

However this has changed in recent years due to a few high profile cases of child deaths due to abuse. As a result, police now have the authority and mandate to move on any suspected case the moment it's reported by CPS. CPS also used to be very poorly organized, and this is also improving.

Of course changes are not expected overnight, but at the very least, this has already caused the most obvious and severe cases to be handled much more promptly. The rising reports of child abuse in the past few years is also a mixed bag...many sensationalist news outlets paint it as a worsening situation. However, by comparing third party reports about abuse estimates in Japan, one can see that the rising number of cases is actually due to a higher reporting rate. The fact that the rate is so high either way is not a good thing, but is another indicator that recent reforms are working.

Police in Japan can be fairly brutal and efficient by the standards of a lot of other first world countries...at least once given clear reason to act. They are reluctant to act where both "common sense" and the law suggests they should practice restraint. However, when an issue tips over into the side of being a clear violation of public order...as child abuse have recently been "unlocked" to encompass by changes in the law...you can expect the parents to be clapped in irons and a confession extracted within the day of being notified by CPS.

Can't help but feel they have different ideas about what running away means, with how quickly she agreed to it.

My biggest worry is nothing in the story itself.

It's the edgelord author himself.

I don't trust him one bit to not suddenly pull a dark ending just to sell his rape fetish porn.

I really hope Self-insert-mc-kun doesn't try to tackle this alone. Something like a relative in some backwater town would be nice. Or at least get his parents to help with money.

I'm ready for the timeskip where they're married with a kid, but we still need to at least see her parents appear once in the story
