Obviously the Royal Family's got to be shit otherwise there wouldn't be an interesting story. For once I would like a story to have the twist be that the king is a mediocre king and there is no battle for succession because there's a clear successor who's also mediocre.

I was just reading “Death's Daughter and the Black Blade” and something somewhat similar happens in that. It threw me off that the Royal Family wasn’t this corrupt but also not good. He was a king whose good at economics… but is currently at war, which he’s incompetent in. He doesn’t make bad decisions due to being evil, but because he wasn’t suited to rule during war time.
