Really going through the checklist of all the "must-have" classic romcom tropes, huh.
- Broken footwear strap for the girl in a yukata ✔
- Literal stumbling into an ecchi situation ✔
- Comedic violence after said situation ✔
- Boy offering girl a piggyback ride ✔
- Fireworks interfering with a confession(?) ✔
I knew I said I wasn't expecting a kiss, but ok. Mixed feelings. Maybe I should be satisfied it's at least self-aware about one of the tropes... I don't know if I could consider the events of this chapter as progress. I'd be very surprised if Yumeji actually confessed at that moment, that Chieri heard it (and somehow responded positively to it, off-screen?) and that they'd be dating after this festival (because why confess, accept and not date...?).
This is a classic interruption by fireworks given that Chieri's reaction after is too muted and Yumeji is way too calm for somebody who just confessed (even more so if the situation is that she just hasn't given him her answer yet), but I'll be glad to be proven wrong. The expressions of the two girls at the end say it all.
Y'know it could be worse, at that moment Yumeji could've said "best friend"
"I can always shoulder your feelings" -> I admit this was nice (but this isn't the first time Yumeji tried to look and sound cool like this) and the pretty color page did help save this chapter for me. At least visually, it was good.
