When any person can have the same physical power, all people can protect their own freedom.
I'm not talking about this year, or even this century, in most nations; but from the 1600s onwards, the ability to have Equal Force, regardless of Social Class, Income, Educational Opportunities, or Gender os the number one reason that monarchy died while democracy (largely) rose to prominence.
(Yes, in some cases the government got the guns first, and kept strict control of them, preventing commoners from becoming equal; they all did poorly by the end of the 1950s... again, because of guns.)
